Glory to Jesus Christ! Glory forever!
Today's Hierarchal Divine Liturgy was fantastic.
I wanted to share a bit from the homily:
The sermon expounded on Evangelism. +Bishop Andrew asked us to look to our right and/or left and see if we brought that person to church. If each family brought one additional person to church, whether someone who has not been there in a while-offering them a ride if need be, or bringing a friend or neighbor, we could fill the seats.
Also, we need to be an example to our peers, and friends. We should live Christ in the home, and on the street. Promote family values at home and bring them to your friends and coworkers. Let Christ's love shine through onto others.
It was a very stirring sermon and I took away a wonderful message.
One thing that did stir up some feelings was this quote:
"Bishops don't close churches, People close churches."
+Bishop Andrew, 17.06.06
Food for thought.
In Christ,
Michael

Michael B, In no way am I minimizing your post. A Heirarchical Liturgy can be truly edifying and it sounds like this certainly was a positive experience for your parish. Accept my apology if my post was offensive. In light of some of the recent parish closings (FL and CT as examples) the direct quote at the end of your post hit a nerve.

Dear Sam,
Your first post hit the nail on the head. I personally found the quote to be "slightly lacking in flavor", in regards to the closings in Florida and Connecticut.
Regarding the bishop's sermon, I wonder if, for the purposes of evangelizing, he would allow a discount for this and next year on the bishop tithes if the parish spends that money on advertising, to increase our flocks. i.e. 6% instead of 8% with supporting documents for the advertising.

One thing that did stir up some feelings was this quote:
"Bishops don't close churches, People close churches."
+Bishop Andrew, 17.06.06 Just like the 'people don't kill people, guns do', it kinda cleverly shifts the blame. Does this mean by simplistic logic that since Bishop Andrew has closed churches he does not consider himsself to be of the people? or for the people? In a certain way he is correct; that people are the church and thus if the church shrinks then the people are at fault. However, by using this logic, he does attempt to excuse himself of his complicity in his lack of pastoral care when the time has come to close churches, which has driven more people away. He doesn't see himself as connected to the events that are causing people to leave. Good liturgy celebration alone is not what keeps people in a parish. An honest sense of extended family is what keeps and draws people. Just my thoughts on the quote, Steve
