From the Cistercian Web Mail: "Fr. Basil Pennington died during Second Vespers of the Sacred Heart on Friday, June 3, 2005 from injuries he suffered some time ago in an auto accident. In addition to being a well-known author, he was also briefly Abbot of Holy Spirit Abbey in Conyers, Georgia. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord."
Father Basil wrote several books about his pilgrimages to Mount Athos. He truly loved the Eastern Churches. I remember the many beautiful times he and I shared so much together at a Cistercian Abbey. May his memory be eternal! Silouan, sorrowful monk

Memory Eternal for a holy monk! His "O Holy Mountain" was and is an inspiration and truly showed his love for the Eastern Church. His vision carried on that of Father M.Louis (Thomas Merton)
"We have Thee as a Wall and A Refuge and a Mediatrix Well-Pleasing unto God whom Thou has borne! O Virgin Theotokos, the salvation of the faithful!"

May his memory be eternal, and may Christ's comfort be with those who loved him.

I am sorry to hear this news as I just recently published a review of Fr. Basil's book, *The Monks of Mt. Athos*. It is a fine book by a fine spirit whose ecumenical sensitivity and irenic nature would, if multiplied, make unity between Catholics and Orthodox so much easier and sooner. Requiescat in pace, O hieromonk Basil! Vichnya pamjat'.

O God of all spiritual and corporeal beings, You Who trampled death, broke the power of Satan and granted life to the whole world, now, O Lord, grant rest to the soul of Your departed priest-monk, Basil, in a place of light, freshness, and peace, where there is no pain, sorrow, or mourning.
As You are a gracious God and the Lover of mankind, remember his years of service to You and forgive him every transgression committed by him in word, deed, or thought, since there is no man alive who has not sinned, for You alone are without sin and You are the Resurrection and the Life, O Christ our God, and we render glory to You, together with Your Eternal Father, and Your most Holy, gracious, and life-giving Spirit, now and ever and forever. Amen.
May his memory be eternal and blessed.

His writings of the Monastic life of the Eastern Churches has truly inspired me. At first, I thought he's an Eastern Catholic but later I realized that he's not.
We will miss his reflections... and his books are most precious to me....

I remember years ago reading his small booklet "The Monastic Life" which impressed me at that time. I also read about a year ago "The Monks of Mount Athos" (aka "O Holy Mountain") which I found a very nice read.
What do others remember as great books of his?

Yes, I also remember M. Basil Pennington, OCSO and his writings especially on "centering prayer." May he rest in peace. He will be missed by many. Thanks be to God for such a life in which he touched so many.
