Maybe this has been posted before, but I just stumbled across it and found it interesting - especially in comparison to the more widely available numbers on counts of parishes.

http://www.risu.org.ua/content.php?page_id=124&l=en

While the number of parishes is greater for the UOC-MP versus the UGCC and the other Orthodox demnominations combined, only 12% of Ukrainians identify with as belonging to it.

Taken together with the fact that only 17% overall attend church once a month or more, there must be a lot of rather empty MP churches.

Dear djs,

It's a very important point that you raise, Big Guy!

For a number of reasons Alex. Do the advocates for the MP in Ukraine know how tenuous his position is? Would like to see the correlation of affiliation with mother tongue (not to mention church attendance).

And...

It is very clear, how much the Ukrainians want their Partriarchate; the idea of "deserving" it is also discussed. But the canons talk about the "need" for it. I think the fluidity of the situation in Ukraine, as suggested by these numbers, gives a point of departure for discusing this "need".

But there is a difficulty here, because the need is in the realm of consolidation of UGC's (counter to their right of return?), and expansion to the marginally churched (the dreaded P word). is the latter in the cards?

I am curious as to your opinion; if you were to make a case to the Vatican to world Orthodoxy and to the world as to why this Patriarchate should be established - not on the basis of desiring, or deserving, but on the basis of need - the important negative things it will prevent, and the positive things that it will advance - what would you say?

Dear djs:

Thanks for reiterating that "need" should be considered seriously first as the raison d'etre of the UGCC Kyivan Patriarchate.

As a starter, we should take heed the well-intentioned plea of Adam DeVille elsewhere in this Forum to discard, albeit temporarily, our pre-conceived prejudices against Old Rome and, perhaps, those against Third Rome!

If I have understood it right, this was/is also the gist of the latest message from His Eminence, Cardinal Husar, given in the name of the Holy Synod of the "Metropolitanate of Kyiv and Halych."

For the Patriarchate of Kyiv!
