I've heard that Solo makes a filling, but I don't use it. Our local GFS has poppyseeds in quart containers. I don't own a poppyseed mill, so I cook the poppyseeds to soften them prior to beating the tar out of 'em in the food processor. We discovered accidentally that if you cook them in orange juice, the result is absolutely delicious.

Father Jack, I knew the Seminary caterer was Jewish, but I didn't know he also catered Vladyko Judson's funeral lunch. Something about coming full circle??? Glad you enjoyed the apple.

Dear Mother Sharon,

Baruch haShem Adonai!

You've planted some important seeds here.

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving - all this food talk will be put to good use by way of a heightened appetite this weekend.

Lauro,

Are you speaking of marzipan? Marzipan is a sweetened almond paste, frequently used as a medium for creating edible, fancifully shaped confections.

Does anybody know what the Goyim call Hamantaschen?
Just back from spring break in SF. I went to the Moscow & Tblisi bakery on Geary to check out the Russian name of the cookie in question. Although most items have both name- (in Russian) and price-tags, this one had only the price. So I approached the sales woman, who was conversant in both Russian and English, and who, to my surprise, appeared to be Chinese (maybe central Asian?). I asked her the Russian name of the cookie. She smiled and said: "Hamantaschen". smile

Didn't get to the sites you mentioned, but did go to Our Lady of Fatima for a beautiful Liturgy.

And temptation? How much dim sum - har gow, chive dumplings, rice noodles with scallop, bean curd skin rolls with shitake mushrooms, mock goose, dou-fu fa, etc. - can one eat and still call it fasting?
shocked
