Myles - I'm stunned - had not spotted that this morning.

OK - I have to say I would like to see what the one she was wearing was like , bearing in mind she said

Quote
She said her daughter believed in God but did not regularly attend church.
But as she has already been wearing it for 3 years I believe I have to wonder why they have suddenly clamped down.

Are Muslem girls allowed their suits ? Are the Sikh boys allowed their Turbans ?

I remember reading some years ago where some British school districts eliminated Hot Crossed Buns at Easter, because it was assumed they were offensive to non-Christians.

Nothing would surprise me now .

We have to bend over backwards so that our Muslim friends feel welcome , I don't mind that really , but when it comes down to our Christian Festivals becoming less important than theirs - well somethings wrong somewhere.

I do know an RC School where all the school meals are Halal ! No option - take it or leave it.

It is a Sikh cross.

I'm sure the school officials can get employment with the ACLU in the U.S.

Halaal in the most liberal sense simply means beef, chicken, or fish as opposed to pork or shellfish.

Dear Myles,

Is wearing a Union Jack lapel pin allowed?

There are three Crosses on that, you know!

Have they reinterpreted the Union Jack too?

Do tell! Do tell!

God Save The Queen!

For health and safety reasons the only jewellery which can be worn for school is an inexpensive watch and a single pair of small stud earrings.

This is on the school website.

Of interest is that they dont permit jewllery on health and safety grounds which raises a question of them allowing any dispensation from this rule. If it is unsafe or a health hazard for one child to wear jewllery, then this must be true for all children.

It appears they have a long way to go in sorting this type of thing out.

I note on Google that the school got a very poor report from the school inspectors in regard to their very poor accademic record.

This is the part that bugs me:

Quote
He added: "As a Christian I don't have to wear a crucifix but Sikhs don't have that option and we have to be understanding. We live in a multi-faith society."
So to accomodate one religion the rules can be bent but for Christianity--the state religion (nominally)--no such economy can be exercised? If jewellery is that dangerous then nobody should excused. Just because Christians arent obliged to wear the cross (and indeed, if this girl is a Protestant and a smart one she can argue based on Sola Scriptura in light of Ezekiel that it is obligatory) it doesn't mean we should not. They would have to call the police if they wanted to eject me from class for wearing the cross that is always around my neck, for good and ill. If they can exercise dispensations for the Sikh's why not the Christians? Yet another example of the Western world's irrational fear and flight from its Christian heritage.

PS) I have no idea about the lapel Alex. Maybe I should send it to Derbyshire and get them to vet it?

I would do what the girl did. I would refuse to remove my cross, too.

I'm not too disturbed about the quote, though. When I was in a teenager, I was sort of what I would describe as a "hopeful agnostic" - I very much wanted to have faith, but it was really evading me and I doubted a lot. My parents - my dad a devout Roman Catholic, my mom Orthodox - were smart about it. They countered with prying me to read the Bible more carefully, particularly (they knew their kid) Acts, and they introduced me to the writings of great theologians and doctors of the church. St. Augustine, St. Teresa of Avila, etc.

But I still wore a cross even when I was a doubting Thomas and I still would have refused to take it off.
