A friend from another forum asked me why the deacon points his stole at the icon of Jesus during the intercessions (like, for favorable times....Let us pray to the Lord). Is this because we are directing our prayers at Him?

Thanks smile .

Technically the deacon is not pointing at the icon but raising his hand in prayer, kind of a half orans position. Raising the orar is also a kind of signal of attention. In the Roman Senate when one wanted to speak the stole was raised.

Dear Fr. Deacon Lance,

And, I am informed by two priests, a Senator raised two fingers up, like the priest and bishop does today when blessing the faithful.

Prof. Alex Roman (my new title) wink

The photos of the Protodeacon at St Elias Church (Toronto) web site would support Fr Deacon's information of the finger formation and the holding up of the orarion.

Dear Friends,

We once had a Deacon who did this so gracefully that our eyes were fixed on him during the Liturgy most intently!

He really "stole" the show . . .

Alex
