Dear Gary, I'm from Ohio and I knew the hunting trip was a photo-op, but isn't just about everything in a campaign--whether it be Bush or Kerry? Correct me if I'm mistaken, but I understood Kerry to be a longtime hunter, fisherman, sailor, motorcyclist, etc.

Yesterday, a group of us from school were going to one friend's house to pass out candy, have pizza, and to do some trick-or-treating for those who wanted. I threw together a costume in all of two minutes. It was a pitiful attempt at a Secret Service agent. The sunglasses and the single earphone made up for what was lacking in my mismatched dark blue suit (I left my black suit at home). One part of the night really amused me. While a few individuals were inside waiting for kids to come to the door, I stood outside on the porch next to the door. Another friend, dressed in some sort of black robe and demon-mask getup, sat on the other side. When children would come up on the porch, it was me, in the suit and shades, that scared them. They'd keep looking at me, not sure of what I was doing there. They could ignore the guy in the mask, but I was intimidating. One kid was priceless: he didn't say a word, not even a "Trick or Treat" or "Thank you," and kept glancing at me nervously the whole time. After that, I went inside, broke out laughing, and couldn't inflict any more children to the horror that was my costume. Dave

Normally, we get about 40 or so kids for halloween but this year we only got 19. I wonder if this has something to do with the fact it was on a Sunday and that it was a weekend to boot? Stuck with lots of goodies, JoeS

I had an interesting experience the other night while giving out candies. There were a few youths..(about 14-17 years old) who came to my door without any costume. At the beginning of the night, I wanted to put a sign on the door. "no costume = No candy" but didn't want to be a scrooge. when I opened the door.. the first kid held out his shopping bag and said " what up dawg" I asked where the costumes were and he replied that he was Muslim and he was not allowed to wear costumes. I gave them all candies..and closed the door in disappointment...

Brad, I think the "what up dawg" would have done it for me , unless I had a baggie of kibbles at hand . Many years, Neil, who found some really good stuff in the trick or treat bag - and Conor doesn't really like candy (besides that it doesn't help his hyperactivity). Who knew that there were orange-flavored KitKats ?.

Believe it or not, "dawg" as in "whaddup dawg" is actually a term of endearment, and is not used in a derogatory manner. It is connected to the idea of a dog's being man's best friend. Now, I certainly would not use it myself. Funny how words and phrases take on a life of their own... Rememeber "WASSUP!" from a few year's ago. It made quite a hilarious commerical during the Super Bowl.

We had about 20 kids here, mostly accompanied by older brothers or sisters. Some did a quick poem!

Reminds me of when working in the states I was sitting having lunch when I informed the group I was going to 'get my piece' - i.e. get my sandwich. I was greeted with looks of panic or bewilderment, apparently they though I was about to produce a handgun!
