Hello
My boss will go to Rome tomorrow, she wants to know where to find a Traditional Latin Mass with Gregorian chant for the Christmas time.
She'll be there from the 24th to the 30th december (Rome, Venice and Florence).
Thanks a lot.

There should be at least one TLM celebrated at St. Peter's Basilica pursuant to Pope Benedict's rescripto exaudienza, which was issued to the current Archpriest, commanding him to allow the celebration of the TLM upon the request of Cardinal Castrillon Hoyos, the President of the Ecclesia Dei Commission.
Cardinal Castrillon Hoyos has been celebrating the TLM in the other major basilicas in Rome.

Thanks a lot. I assume she doesn't want to go to SSPX?

If she is in Venice, she should attend Mass in St. Mark's. They still retain part of the Mass in Latin, with a wonderful choir. Yes, I suppose St. Peter's, and perhaps St. Maria Maggiore (I attended Christmas mid-night Mass there 7 years ago.)

Cardinal Castrillon Hoyos, as the newly appointed President of the Eccelesia Dei Commission, celebrated the TLM at the St. Mary Major Basilica on May 24, 2003, the first Cardinal to do so. Archived story [ cwnews.com] . Amado

There's an SSPX church quite near St. Mary Major. That is an option.
I'm pretty sure there is another SSPX church or two in the Eternal City.
Anyway, there is also an FSSP chapel that is, I understand, fairly small but beautiful.
Apparently the Dominican Mass is celebrated now in the Angelicum, too.
I'll ask my traditionalist seminary friend who's studying in Rome about the locations and details. He attends the FSSP Mass and helped to organize the Dominic Rite Mass.

Unfortunately, there are 3 SSPX chapels [ sanpiox.it] in Italy! Click on "La Fraternit Sacerdotale San Pio X" on the left and scroll down to the bottom of the page for the addresses. Amado

I should clarify, that "why" was meant for the presence of SSPX in Rome, not whether or not to click the links. Sorry.

Amado Interesting - only 3 in the entire country? A Brazilian tradist-friend of mine told me that the SSPX and groups like that have almost no presence in Italy, Spain and Portugal. The reason had something to do with the "Latin mind" versus the north European mind (an assertion I don't understand). I'm curious about the veracity of this statement, which is why I asked that question.

Isn't there already a thread about the sspx elsewhere on this forum. I do believe nosotros amigo el Mexican asked where a Latin Mass would be in Roma. Obviously the one in St. Peter's celebrated by the Pope (don't know what time he'll do the big mass) will be in Latin. Seemingly the readings and petitional prayers are done in the language of the people, which is always pretty cool to hear all those langauges.

Hi
Thanks for the help, actualy she wanted to know where to find a Latin Mass with Gregorian chant. She does want to go to a Papal celebration and blessing, but this is a kind of internationalist mass, not really a Roman mass as it was before, with Gregorian chant.
I thought Mgr. Piero Marini was going to be removed and replaced with a more Roman-minded master of ceremonies.
It seems Pope Benedict hasn't replaced the old apparatus.

Pyrohy: The Pope always celebrates the "big Mass" at midnight, December 24th, Roma time. It's called the "Midnight Mass!" :p This year, "[t]he midnight Mass of Christmas, celebrated by Pope Benedict XVI in St. Peter's Basilica, will be broadcast over 124 television networks reaching 74 different countries." Rest of the CWNews story [ cwnews.com] . I join you in hoping that the Holy Father will celebrate it in Latin, or by using the Tridentine or parts thereof (Gregorian chants). Amado
