Dear friends,

I have a question that hopefully someone can answer. I believe it is more of a superstition than anything.
Jackie, Ava and I recently moved into a new house. We have a bit of a dilemma concerning the positioning of Ava's bed.
One wall of her bedroom is entirely windows and the opposite wall has a door for a bathroom.

Given the way that Ava sleeps (and she has a tendency to roll to her right and sometimes fall out of bed) we figured the only way that her bed could go while reducing the risk of her falling was against the wall corner. The head of the bed faces west while the foot faces east.

When my in-law's saw the layout, they immediately moved it in a north-south position, stating that the Orthodox do not sleep east-west because that is the way that they are buried.

Now the side of the bed is blocking the door to the bathroom and Ava's head is hanging off as she sleeps.

Is this tradition or merely superstition. There is no other way that we can position the bed.

Thanks

Brad (facing east)

Dear Brad,

I have *never*, *ever* heard of such a thing here OR in Greece!!!!

Regards,
Alice.....but shhhh, don't let your in-laws know that it is a Greek Orthodox woman who is dispelling their superstitions. :p

I think it related to another, older, more ingrained tradition: meddling in-laws!

David, you may be right.

When we first got the keys to our new house (about a month ago) I came home (we were living with my in-law's for 10 weeks until the house was ready)
from work so I could change and go check the house out.
My mother in law said.. "Make sure you step into the house with your right foot first" I laughed and then replied.. "But, I'm left footed"...

Brad.. (who loves his in-laws very much, but is glad to be in our own home again now. wink )

Dear Brad,

I've not heard of that superstition before, but it wouldn't surprise one!

The most important thing is to have the icon corner facing East, if possible.

So unless you are big on "feng shui" do what you will!

Ha ! Maybe I should move my mother in-law's icon corner and candles from West facing to East facing the next time I'm over there.

Dear Brad,

Now the 'right foot first in a new house' superstition I have heard. It seems to be quite a popular one in Greece....I have no idea why?!? I theorize that it is probably something akin to the right hand being 'good' and you want to enter a new house with only 'good'. confused

How about this one: (LOL biggrin ) You must leave from the same door you came in when visiting someone, or you will destroy the arranged marriage they might have for a child! biggrin eek biggrin

Might one be so bold as to say that Greek in-laws can be just a wee bit overbearing and sometimes silly?!?! LOL! :p

Fondly,
Alice, who implores you NOT to quote me to your wife and in-laws!!! eek

Dear Brad,

There's always a way to turn the tables on the in-laws! smile

I've made a profession of it (and of getting the Administrator's goat here too!) wink

It's something I get from my father . . .

Brad
Only if it is possible to do so by placing the icons in such a way as to block their path and make their usage of the icon corner very uncomfortable.

If that is impossible, then you can be content to bring it up every time you talk to them, lamenting that they do not recognize the Risen Christ who shines from the east.

biggrin
