While taking my noonday constitutional today over by the White House, I passed a boat-load of newpaper vendor boxes. I glanced over to peruse the headlines, as I am wont to do, and LO!
CROWNED BISHOP!! ICONS!!! LAMPS!!! PRIEST WITH EPITRACHELION!! FLOWERS!!! CROSSES!!!
The FRONT page of the Chicago Tribune, above the fold, Patriarch Lyubomir in full living color.
I had to have me a sit down!! Was this the Second Coming?!?!? No, just a major newspaper covering something of extreme importance to part of their readership. Caption: "Cardinal Lubomyr Husar visits St. Nicholas Cathedral, where a new bishop for Ukrainian Greek Catholics, many of whom live in Ukrainian Village, will be installed next week. Story: Metro."
I, of course, Friend of Ukraine that I am, purchased a clean copy of the paper and plan to clip the photo and put it in a frame.
This made my day!!
Christ is Risen!!!

Yours,
kl There are Eastern Catholic Councils of the KofC. Other then that, your post is a bit lacking in charity. Columcille

Just more of that negativity that Joe pointed out in another thread...
Seems that there are some whose only excuse for existance here is to critize and belittle others.
I have also noticed that the amount of posts here has dropped, maybe its time for a break.

The Knights of Columbus were formed in 1882 in New Haven, CT by Fr. Michael McGivney (a man long ovedue for sainthood) for the express purpose of providing support for the Catholic widows and orphans. Since then we have grown into diverse organization, supporting a wide variety of activities--almost all on the local level.
We are not an ecclesial organization; it is self governing group of laymen, not an organ of the heirarchy. We are only found in the United States, Canada, and Asia (usually growing out of American military presence). You wouldn't see it in Europe (there is one council made up of Americans in Rome).
My council meets at a local Melkite Church and is made up of both Latin Rite and Melkite Catholic men. We support our priests, seminarians, and lay people, and our largest activity is still providing aide the orphans and widows of our fallen Brother Knights.
It's an American (or Canadian, etc) thing, not a Latin thing.

The photo on the front page of the Chicago Tribune only had His Beatitude and a priest standing inside the altar. No KofC in my pic.
I'm all for organizations helping the poor and the disadvantaged. Although the "dress up" part makes me a bit nervous. And I am DEFINITELY against the carrying of swords inside the church building. It sends the wrong statement about the Prince of Peace.
Blessings!!
And I'm still TICKLED TO DEATH that the Ukrainian Patriarch made it to the front page, above the fold, of the Chicago Tribune!! Yippee!!!

I really don't think it is at all fair to call the Knights "latinizers." I know of many Byzantine Catholics knights, including a subdeacon who is completely eastern in all respects. One of my friends, a Byzantine Catholic priest, is chaplain to his chapter of the KoC and does a great deal of work for them. Indeed, the Knights do tremendous work for the Church, including on the pro-life front.

Yea, a local blurb, but it's not "global TV" like EWTN....I get letters from Phillipines, and beyond......a bit of self pride sneaking in..... As for the KofC......I have corporate communions for them regularly, and it gives those unfamiliar with our Church an experience of our Catholic faith... We should not fear them, berate them as "Latinizers" which they are far from, but welcome them headresses, swords, ill fitting uniforms and all! As for their "swords" in church....church bulletins used to be called "The Sword"......and if objectional, our bishops should not wear their epignation: An explanation of it: "Bishops, and priests honored to wear the thigh-shield and also the epigonation (in Russian-palitsa), then put these on with the prayer: Gird Thy sword upon Thy thigh, O Mighty one.. "(Ps. 443) And indeed, these originated from the "knee-protectors' suspended from the belt and worn on the thigh by soldiers under their swords. The thigh-shield represents the spiritual sword denoting the celebrant as a soldier of Christ." I would recomend that we be uniters instead of dividers. A sword in church would come in handy sometimes, again, my personal thoughts...after all Our Lord used a cord of rope on the money changers... Just my humble opinion in the diaspora of Florida.

The sword is ceremonial--a specific design requirement is that it could not actually be used for combat, or so I was told.

PS: Sorry to get on my K of C high horse--it is wonderful that the patriarcal visit is drawing such media attention. God willing, there will be more!

Father Michael,
I'm glad to see you posting on this thread! The big question: when is the new season of Light of the East going to air? I seem to recall you filming it several months back.

To Johan's question: No. I was living in a cloister, wearing a heavy black serge robe, and speaking Latin (usually) and English and German on a quondam basis. We did not receive 'secular media', so I didn't know what a hippie was until I went to Germany several years after their initial appearance.
As for the sword thing, I'm still uncomfortable with the whole concept - and I AM familiar with the vestment/sword. I still chuckle when I hear the old Anglican hymn: "Onward, Christian Soldiers!!" I can just hear Jesus singing right along; along with the pacifist martyrs of the first centuries who absolutely refused to fight back when being taken by the Roman government for being subversives. Wimps.
Blessings!!
