I am not an expert in biblical or approved Catholic prophecy, nor do I play one on TV, but in the spirit of Lee Penn's prediction of 2015 (see the Faith page of my site for the link) and Bud Macfarlane's conservative Roman Catholic speculative fiction Pierced by a Sword (sort of like Fr Malachi Martin crossed with Steubenville) here is a try at historical/speculative fiction:

Timeline
2006
• Britain abandons the pound sterling () for the euro.
• Anglican Communion splits, with majority (African and Asian provinces) breaking away from Church of England and US Episcopal Church; minority of Anglicans in America (Anglican Mission in America, American Anglican Council, what's left of Forward in Faith) join new as-yet-unnamed communion, with its primatial see the archbishopric of Singapore.
• Pope John Paul II dies and is eulogized by the worldwide secular media, though the world continues to ignore his teaching about abortion. Conclave elects relatively young liberal Italian, Pope Paul VII.
• ROCOR and the Moscow Patriarchate reconcile. The ROCOR sees in the US merge with the existing Patriarchal jurisdiction, with ROCOR's first hierarch as head. HQ move to Synod at 93rd Street in NY but Metropolitan Laurus' cathedral is now St Nicholas on 97th Street. Extreme converts defect to splinter group based in Suzdal', Russia, the Russian Orthodox Autonomous Church (with whom the Mansonville, Qubec group, the Russian Orthodox Church in Exile, have merged).

2010
• Patriarch of Constantinople abandons Istanbul and moves to Athens, causing a diplomatic incident.
• Europe is united as one state.
• Pope Paul VII has ordained women deacons and brought the Catholic communion into the NCC and WCC.
• Meanwhile, the Russian Orthodox Church has quit the WCC.
• The Catholic mandatory celibacy rule is lifted everywhere for ordinands, which in practice turns out to be a sop to the Eastern Catholics, whose Orthodox-oriented converts had been moving to Orthodoxy, particularly the OCA and the Antiochian Archdiocese, in recent years.

2015
• Monastic women deacons appear in most Orthodox Churches.
• Pope Paul VII tries to ordain women priests and denies the divinity of Christ ex cathedra, is deposed by a Catholic general council and becomes an antipope, based in Geneva.
• Patriarch Kyrill of Kyiv, head of the Ukrainian Catholic Church, is elected the first ever non-Roman Pope, head of the whole Catholic communion. Pope Kyrill I remains Byzantine and appoints a cardinal patriarch of the West/head of the Roman Church.
• While Pope Kyrill resumes the decades-long cleanup/restoration of the Catholic communion, excommunicating dissenters, Amchurch officially goes into schism as the cardinal archbishop of Los Angeles and scores of bishops, priests and laity join antipope Paul in a new Geneva-based Ecumenical Catholic Church, which is in communion with what is left of the Anglican Communion.
• While all restrictions on the Tridentine Mass are now gone, the main restoration movement in the Roman Church uses authentic texts translated from the Novus Ordo and a revival of much traditional ceremonial with a few Byzantine and conservative Anglican borrowings.

2016
• Bishops of Society of St Pius X along with their churches are reconciled to official Roman Church.

2018
• Russia, Ukraine and Belarus reenter political and ecclesiastical union, Rus', under Patriarch Alexis III of Moscow. Pope Kyrill is an honored guest at the Moscow ceremony and gives the blessing alongside the Moscow Patriarch.

2020
• Orthodoxy in America is reunited into one canonical Church for the first time since 1917. The Greek patriarch (formerly in Istanbul but since 2010 head of all Greek Christians from his see of Athens) and the Antiochian patriarch in Damascus finally approve the transfer of their prosperous American congregations to the new Church, under OCA Metropolitan, now Patriarch Joseph I. The Orthodox Church in America, now recognized as autocephalous by worldwide Orthodoxy, includes ethnic/national/Old Calendar vicar bishops, including for the former Moscow/former ROCOR groups. American Orthodoxy's patriarchal see: St Nicholas Cathedral in New York.
• Pope Kyrill makes progress in ecumenical dialogue with the Orthodox Churches. Catholics adopt Orthodox paschalion, drop filioque. Assyrian Church of the East is in Eucharistic communion with Catholic Church without being absorbed into it.

2021
• Melkite Church enters dual communion with Rome and Antioch.

2022
• Peace declared in Palestine; UN gets credit.
• Rus' submits to European rule.

2023
• Copts, Ethiopians, Armenians, Assyrians, Jacobites and Malankara reconciled with Orthodoxy at general council in Athens.
• The Ruthenian Church is all but gone in America, reduced to a few ethnic parishes whittled down by death and attrition of generational members to RC and Protestant churches and to secular culture.* There is talk of disestablishing Ruthenian sees and placing the surviving churches under Roman ordinaries. The Ukrainian Catholic Church's membership dips but there is no threat of extinction largely owing to ethnic loyalties and immigration from Ukraine.

[*I'm not wishing this — heavens, no! This simply reflects sad demographic trends as partly reported here, as I understand them.]

2025
• UN declares one world government. Ageing antipope Paul gives the invocation at the ceremony in UN HQ in NY. New restrictions are placed on Church in united Europe and united Amricas.

2027
• Paul VII dies of natural causes in Geneva. His successor is Pius XIII.

2028
• Pope Kyrill is assassinated in Rome by gunman with connections to Pius XIII and new world order, not realizing his dream of reconciling orthodox, apostolic Christianity; conclave elects Cardinal Mpozi of Tanzania as Pope Mbebe I.
• A revitalized Rus' Orthodox population under Patriarch Tikhon II of Moscow revolts against the new world order. The armed forces, with a nuclear arsenal, join the revolt, forming the Legion of St Michael and seizing Moscow and control of Rus'. The world is at war. Nuclear bombs destroy San Francisco and Kyiv before a cease-fire, but there is no real peace.

2031
• Pius XIII, lauded for his "peace' efforts in the recent struggle, is elected president of the new world order by a grateful population and is installed at the new Cathedral of All Faiths in Jerusalem, on the Temple Mount. The Antichrist is here.
• The Vatican is destroyed in a terrorist attack. Pope Mbebe I is driven from Rome into exile, rumor has it in Russia.

2033
• Underground somewhere in central Russia, Pope Mbebe, Patriarch Tikhon and the surviving Orthodox patriarchs (those who have not joined the NWO), representing the remaining Christian faithful underground worldwide, meet. Surviving conservative Protestants have two representatives there as observers; these managed to survive the arduous journey.

The Eighth Ecumenical Council begins. The Schism is over.

As the hierarchs concelebrate at a makeshift Holy Table, there is a blinding light, not from nuclear bombs this time...

I like the idea that the reunion concelebration is the final liturgy to be celebrated on earth.

Dear Anastasios,

I can't believe it! You like something that Serge wrote! Amazing! (Kidding, kidding . . .).

If I can interrupt your conversation to add something, I found the point on having two Popes at the same time fascinating.

I wonder if "Paul VII" will include readings from the books of other religions during his coronation?

Alex

Большое спасибо за ваши ответы.

Alex, Paul VII won't have that at his installation as Pope but his antipope successor in Geneva, Pius XIII, will have them as his installation.

Dear Serge,

Serge, you are O.K. I will even say you are more than O.K.

Just take it easy with Steve, O.K.?

God bless,

Alex

Ok guys, here's my shot. It's not as well thought-out as Serge's, but has a different spin.

2004

-John Paul II dies. A conservative African cardinal is elected Pope John XXIV.
-Anglican Schism occurs. Episcopal Church and Archbishopric of Cantebury are only ones left in the old communion; other provinces such as Africa and Asia form new jurisdiction, “True Anglican Church of England.”
-ROCOR and MP reconcile; 1/3 of members unify with Matthewite Old Calendarists.
-By edict of new GOA Archbishop Traditionalastos, organs banned for good.
-OCA finally admits it does NOT have 1,000,000 members.
-European Union moves towards one state, led mostly by the French, Germans, and English.

2010

-Europa becomes country. Mandatory euthanasia after 80 enforced to cut down on health care costs; abortion campaigns reach all new high with clinics being installed in all French middle schools: “abortion between 3rd hour and lunch, while you wait.”
-All Orthodox in America finally reconcile administratively. One bishop per city, but each parish determines which chant and typikon to employ.
-Rome cracks down on liberal dissenters. Said dissenters leave and join union with remaining Anglicans.
-Rome allows that universal primacy may have been a development after all. This being said, TAC-England joins union with Rome. Rome allows them to have their own sui juris church, under newly-elevated Patriarch Thomas of York.
-Greece and Bulgaria begin to clamor over their status in Europa
-Turkey breaks vow of peace and executes two metropolitans of the Patriarchate of Constantinople.

2012

-Turkey attacks Greece. Europa plunges into civil war. Syria, Greece, Bulgaria, Russia, Iraq, and Armenia invade Turkey.
-Southern Europa and Northern Europa become separate states, while still fighting war.
-American professor becomes active in Southern Europa politics.

2017

-Weakened after drain of resources, Turkey cannot support itself and collapses.
-American professor leads Southern Europa to victory in war and sues for peace based on Christian principles. Vowing to stop the move towared ultimate anti-life secularism, he is consecrated Emperor Anastasios III and renames Southern Europa the Roman Empire. Serge B. is named head of media relations. Kurt K. is named head of social security administration. Dr. J. is named head of labor union boards. Alex R. named head of sociological studies. Edwin named Court's Devil's Advocate. Brendan named Attorney General. Wow! Nepotism has returned, too!

2025

-Emperor Anastasios III calls ecumenical council (hey there's an emperor again!) and convinces Catholics, Orthodox, and NonChalcedonians that the only way to fight the secular forces of North Europa is to stand united.
-China invades United States. War begins anew. The two superpowers basically destory heavy sections of each other. Emperor Anastasios III goes to the aid of his former country, and in the end, becomes sole super power leader.

2030

-8th ecumenical council completed. After repeated interventions, Emperor Anastasios III tells both Popomaniacs of the Latin Church and “you are graceless!” faction of Orthodox to grow up. Elias Zoghby, still alive after 137 years, offers final solution. Union celebrated.
-having restored one church and one empire, Emperor Anastasios III smiles as he looks to the sky and sees the Lord returning. Kurt, in sigh of frustration for having to sit next to Serge at all proceedings, exclaims, “Jesus! It's about time!”

Anastasios,

That's pretty funny, especially the OCA admitting it hasn't got a million members.

About the true Anglicans: the delicious irony is their communion, bigger than the remaining Anglican Communion, no longer includes the Church of England nor is its HQ in England anymore, so it doesn't make much sense to have "C of E' in its name. Also, much of its membership, particularly in the Far East, is classical low-church Anglican (more Protestant) in orientation, so such won't jump into union with Rome overnight.

Great news: Lee Penn (a Russian Catholic) has read my story and approves.

Just a minor point: Pope Kyrill would not be the first non-Roman Pope. Several Greeks have already held the position. And they were Greeks, not Romans. So, the "Shoes of the Fisherman" scenario will not be repeated. But hey, the Polish gentleman we have now serving the Lord in Rome has done pretty much a bang-up job on his own.

Blessings!

Dr J,

Thanks. Any other comments? I realized when I wrote "Future world?' that several Greeks have been Pope, as have a Jew, a Syrian (maybe more than one), a Dutchman, an Englishman and now a Pole. But when I asked about the preschism Greek and Syrian Popes retaining their Easternness I was told they became Romans. Thus Pope Kyrill — not the liberalish early-1960s Pope Kyril in Morris West's novel The Shoes of the Fisherman, who seemed Byzantine in name only to begin with and who became Roman on his becoming Pope — would be the first non-Roman Pope. Vicar of Christ but not Latin patriarch! (I've never seen the Anthony Quinn movie based on West's book.)

I dont believe in the anti-Christ coming a second time. He already came in the Roman Empire was defeated. Now we just wait for God to return to Earth.

Ahh, but according to the Church Fathers, there were Latin-Speaking Romans and Greek-Speaking Romans--to call yourself a Hellene in the Christian Roman Empire which lasted until 1453 would be the same thing as calling yourself a pagan! ;-) (cf John Romanides' work).

Poor Kurt! Head of the social security administration?

I expected (at least) Grand Eunuch and High Peeper of the Emperor's Concubines. ( And is the Emperor consulting with Grand Duke Alexi on the various virtues of high powered and potent elixers? His Potency does have a dynasty to maintain and successors to ensure. Long live the emperor!)

hmmm....., my sainted mother who, not unique to herself, has some peculiar 'doctrines' of the Catholic Church including "mutilation of the body' which she said included tatoos. I am sure enough not parting with anything to become a eunuch, Grand or notsogrand. (BTW, she wouldn't allow me to buy a box of cookies shaped like Zodiac signs because that was 'superstition' and anti-Catholic (totally different than putting a image of the Blessed Mother in the window, facing out, to bring rain -- that was pious & Catholic!). Don't ask!

However, with the reunion of the Orthodox and Catholic branches of the Knights of Malta (SMOM) and the Office of Grand Master placed under the patronage of His Imperial Majesty by the Pope, I would humbly grovel at the hem of the Imperial robe to be named to that office.

K.

Dear Free Greek,

Thanks to you, you'll make monarchists of us all, even Kurt!

Now, if you can just work on Dr. John . . .

Elixirs would be good too!
