The statement comes from Nikolai Mitrokhin of the the Institute of the Study of Religion in the Commonwealth of Independent States and Baltic Countries, and is sourced by an article in the
National Catholic Reporter.
Two points:
1. I owe Orthoman and all other Orthodox who took offense an apology for not checking things and stating that a guy's supposition was a fact.
2. the paper is known around here as the "National Catholic Distorter" for a reason. Nevertheless, I've found (at least what I've seen of) Joh Allen's writings to be objective and overall quite good, and so I'm comfortable citing an article of his.
