Hello everyone-

A history lesson please:

An article referenced in another post (http://www.day.kiev.ua/130700/) states "official religious contacts with the Patriarch of Constantinople were terminated after the Kyiv See was subordinated to the Moscow Patriarchate in 1686".

Could anyone provide further details? Most histories say that after Kyivan Rus fell to the Mongols (as I recall), the Patriarchate moved to Vladimir and from there to Moscow.

Thanks,

Marc

Dear Marc,

Even when the Metropolitan of Kyiv moved northwards, he still held the same title i.e. the title did not change because he moved his HQ to safer locations.

Today, the Moscow Patriarchate names only St Hilarion, St Michael and St Macarius as "Metropolitans of Kiev" in its calendar. The rest of them are called "Metropolitans of Moscow."

But the Old Russian Believers don't do this, they refer, for example, to St Peter as Metropolitan of Kiev and St Alexius as such.
