Don't forget beans, beans the magical fruit!!

I love lentel soup, the store bought isn't so great, though. Last year, I tried making this for the first time. I'm single, 23, never made soup in my life. I put lentels in, a ton of bay leaves, a ton of other spices, vegetables, no seasoning, and I gagged when I tasted it.

Today, I tried again--onion soup seasoning, lentels, black beans, and threw in some squid. It turned out really good. Although I could have had a little more seasoning... praxis makes perfect, right??

Other easy meals are Ramen noodle packets, broth made from boullion cubes, and good old spaghetti with plain sauce. And rice!

1. I like to put raisins in with the beans -- it gives a slight sweet flavor.
2. Potato soup is very filling -- and quite nutritious.
3. Tomatoes, green onions, and sliced summer squash -- colorful -- and delicious hot or cold.
4. Dumplings made from mashed potatoes and farina (cream of wheat)and boiled on top of cabbage makes for a complete meal.
5. Peanut butter or any 'nut' butter spread on bread and then topped with sliced fruit is very nutritious.

Enjoy!

A Lenten Drink Recipe!

Don't rub your eyes, you saw that right!

It's called a Gunner, and was highly popular all around the British Empire in the early 20th Century. While it seems to have died out in the Home Counties, it remains a favourite in some former colonies among those classes that remember colonial parties.

Take a tall glass with plenty of ice, add a few dashes of Angostoura Bitters (optional), top up with equal parts Ginger Beer and Ginger Ale. Garnish with a slice of orange and one of lemon.

That's right, no alcohol! It's Lent after all! It's a good drink, one barely misses the alcohol.

Frozen Horned Melon

It is not easy to find, but well worth the
search. The oval spiked fruit is bright
orange on the outside, and the inside is filled
with glutinous green seeds. This strange
fruit is well known to have mysteriously
potent aphrodisiac qualities. It is, after all,
horny.

1 horned melon
2 spoons of sugar

Slice the melon in two and scoop out the
seeds. Mix with the sugar then put in individual
dishes that can withstand being frozen. Put
the mixture into the freezer for an hour until
it is sufficiently frozen.

Serves 2 people who noticed that this fruit is
occasionally used as a prop in space movies.

Fast and Easy Mexican Soup:

2 cans of black beans (DRAINED AND WELL RINSED)
one large (24 oz or more) jar of salsa, as spicy as you like it
2 cans of cream style corn.

Mix together in pan. Add enough water to thin slightly to desired consistency. Heat through.

Serve with tortilla chips or in tortilla bowls if available. (chopped cilantro on top adds some colour)
