I prayed the Akathist to St. Francis Friday evening and was quite impressed. Then, Saturday morning, I received a phone call that our family's pet cat, missing since November, had been found in the parking garage stairwell of a shopping mall some 20 miles away and across a river - a little dirty, but in good health!
St. Francis, that friend of all God's creatures, must be most impressed by the beauty of this Akathist!

Your Akathist to Holy Francis is lovely! Have you ever thought of writing one to St Seraphim?? (have you already done one??) I WOULD love to see one such in honour of our Father Among the Saints of Sarov, who in many ways was similar to Francis.

Thank you for your kindness!
I revised the Akathist to get rid of the "Thee's" and "Thou's" and I think it reads much better.
I've always been impressed with the Ruthenian love for St Francis and the Byzantine Franciscans.
A Byzantine-style icon of St Francis, with his life in the border, hung in the corner of a favourite Italian restaurant of ours.
I had to give in and bought in from the proprietor. I just took it off the wall and walked out with it.
May the Poor Man of Assisi who founded the tradition of the Christmas Creche bless us all throughout these forty days of the Nativity Season!

O Holy Father Francis, you were like the rich young man of the Gospel who came to Christ asking what he ought to do to inherit eternal life. Praying before the miraculous Cross, you heard Christ's Voice calling you to rebuild His Church and repair what was tattered. You at first understood this command to mean you must rebuild the ruined stones of church buildings. Later you came to recognize that you must work to recreate the image of God in the souls of the tepid to form them into living stones for God's spiritual Temple, crying: Alleluia!

Gazing upon the holy icon of the Cross of San Damiano, we listen with you for the Voice of Christ to us and for His command to build up His Body that is the Church. You teach us to study the Cross as the great book revealing the secrets of the Saviour's love for us and all people, as we sing:
Rejoice, for when Christ was uplifted on the Cross, He drew all to Himself!
Rejoice, for Christ showed you His pierced Hands and Feet!
Rejoice, for we bow to Christ in the pine, the cedar and the cypress!

O vagabond troubadour of God's greatness in His created beings! You did ceaselessly praise the Lord for the wonders of nature. The Muslim leader had to turn his face away at the brightness shining from your face, O Holy Father Francis. Agreeing to treat his Christian prisoners with greater mercy, he could not oppose the great grace he saw emanating from you, and your great conviction concerning the truth of the Gospel of Christ. We ask you to help us all become icons reflecting the light of Christ to all nations that do not yet know Him, and we sing:

"If anyone seeks to follow Me, let him sell all he has, and take up his Cross," commands the Lord. The lesser brothers and sisters who are your spiritual children strive to grow in the life in Christ through closer imitation of you, Father Francis. Giving up everything to receive the hundred-fold reward in the next life, they sing:

You are a light to the world, Father Francis, and do shine brightly with miracles. Bodily ailments leave the people, and souls are turned toward God. Asking your intercession for similar graces for us today, we sing:

With what hymns of praise may we adequately praise your voluntary trials and tribulations, O Holy Father Francis? In the midst of your great sufferings and illness, a brother, in his ignorance, told you to ask the Lord that He might have greater compassion on you, His servant. Falling in your weakened state to the ground and kissing it, however, you thanked God for your suffering and submitted to His Will, saying you were ready to receive even more pain, if this be according to God's Providence. Help us to bear the trials and tribulations of life with like long-suffering resignation to God's Will, as we sing:
Rejoice, who did suffer spiritually with Christ in His Agony!
Rejoice, who was entirely conformed to the Will of God!
Rejoice, for nothing can separate you from the love of God in Christ!

The akathist for St Seraphim already exists! It was, presumably, written at the same time as the service to the saints for his glorification in 1903. The author of the services was the the father (don't recall his name)of the new martyr Bishop Seraphim of Dmitriev, and was the dean of the Old Rite Orthodox within the patriarchate of Moscow. St Seraphim of Dmitriev was cured from a life threatening illness through the intercession of the Saint Seraphim of Sarov, hence his father's devotion to the saint.

The Jordanville Akathistnyk has the Akathist to St Seraphim of Sarov and the "Orthodox Word" has an issue where it is contained in as well.

Also, Father Mark, do Old Believers in general honour St Seraphim of Sarov?

Dear Alex, I congratulate you greatly on your akafist work, but have to add that from a traditionalist Orthodox perspective Francis of Assisi's spirituality and experiences are very suspect. To our way of thinking he is a victim of prelest - of great dillusion. However, I do not wish to open a discussion on this subject. He is very dear to many brothers and sisters on the forum and a discussion may very well have the 'Esphigmenou effect'. I think that St Seraphim is generally known to Old Believers and in some areas is personally venerated by them. However, this is not part of their institutional life and does not find expression within the temple. The situation of the edinovertsy is, of course, different. They are free to venerate the saints of the Nikonian Church as commom saints. However, one doesn't find mixing within temple and worship. Saints like Seraphim, should remind us that the gap between Old Belief and provincial 'state Orthodoxy' were not as wide as some historians of both camps would have us believe. The cooperation in the worst years of persecution also demonstated this - from the dual jurisdictionalism of Archbishop Andrei Ufimsky (with the blessing of Patriarch Tikhon) down to life in isolated villages. Bless me a sinner, Father Mark! I find your posts not only spiritually consoling, but also intellectually stimulating and gratifying. Yes, St Ignatius Brianchaninov didn't like St Francis at all, considering him to be an ecstatic etc. Certainly, individual Orthodox have and do venerate St Francis and the New Skete Orthodox monastery in North America is a former Eastern Catholic Franciscan monastery that became Orthodox - and they continue to not only publicly venerate ST Francis in their monastery, but to also publish an Icon of him as well, and this is something that the Orthodox Church authorities have not forbidden them. I corresponded with John Meyendorff and he had a great devotion to the "Poor Man of Assisi" as he called him, even sending me replies to my questions in envelopes sealed with postage stamps bearing the image of St Francis. Something similar obtained in the West whose theologians long regarded the Hesychasts of Mt. Athos as deluded "Quietists." Although now, St Gregory Palamas is venerated as a saint within Roman Catholicism! Perhaps, in time, things will change on both sides. St Seraphim of Sarov tended to have a rather negative view, at first, of the Old Believers. The Jordanville Monastery has published a book in Russian about this. Early in his life, St Seraphim appeared to believe that those who persisted in the two-fingered Sign of the Cross would need special prayers said for them after their repose! He sometimes grabbed the hands of Old Believers visiting his monastery, and forcibly shaped them into the three-fingered Sign of the Cross, saying: "Cross yourself this way!" He mellowed with time and often encouraged the Old Believers to remain true to their prayer life etc. May St Seraphim, St Francis AND St Avvakum the Hieromartyr and Confessor pray for us all! Dear Alex,
As you may know there is a dearth of akafists in the Old Rite. Because Old Ritualism has canonised and crystallised the pre-Nikonian liturgical texts, processes which have happened in other rites have been arrested. This is reflected in the use of only two akafists - to the Lord and to the Mother of God. I think this is a great shame. The akafistnik, as published by Jordanville is a truly wonderful book.
I am always surprised by the extent to which Old Rite Orthodoxy has turned to the general menaion, despite having expert Slavonicists and chinovniky.
This is especially true of the use of the general service for the Hieromartyr Avvakum!
