Hi guys,
I was making a babka for my sister's birthday the other day and I was having trouble doing it. It was from a Polish cookbook, but I assume it's all very similar to Russian and Ukrainian (read: Byzantine, hence this forum) cooking. Anyway, I think I may have put too much milk in with the yeast, because I was supposed to be able to roll out the dough. But I couldn't, because it was sponge-like. So I ended up smushing it into a bunt pan and it actually came out pretty well. My questions: when you make a babka, are you able to roll it out, and what kind of pan do you use and what kind of stores carry it?
By the way, has anyone seen the episode of the Simpsons where Bart goes to Catholic school and he and Homer want to convert? It plays right into ethnic and religious stereotypes (I'll admit, I like ethnic jokes, especially the Irish ones, even though I am part Irish!) Anyway, Marge has a dream where she goes to heaven, only it's Protestant heaven, and there are two guys playing croquet, both wearing argyle sweater vests. She wonders where the rest of her family is, and an angel points over towards Catholic heaven, where the Irish are fighting, the Italians are eating, the Spanish are playing with a pinata, and I forget what other groups were there, but in the middle of it all were Homer and Bart playing with Jesus. Sorry if this is inappropriate, I personally found it wicked hilarious.

Google "babka" and check this out: Babka Trivia [ebabka.com] Looks like the Jewish people also claim "babka" as their own! This may also be an interesting website Prosfora [prosphora.org]
