Glory to Jesus Christ !

Sounds like a skete is a form of monastery, from what I've read. Can any fill me in on the particulars ?

Glory to Him Forever !

A skete is a smaller monastery, sometimes only a couple of monks, which is usually formed from another larger monastery. The Hegumen may bless one of the fathers to start a skete and be the spiritual father of his new foundation.

Some sketes don't even have priest monks but rely on the mother monastery for a priest and deacon to come occasionally. The purpose of monastic life is to be a monk, and ordination to the priesthood or diaconate is secondary to the primary goal, which is to live the "angelic life".

While the Hegumen or Protohegumen may later decide that one of the monks should be ordained, you will not at all see the majority of monks be ordained priests as in many Latin monasteries, only a couple to take care of the liturgical and sacramental needs of the monastery.

There is a small group(4)of EC women in our area who a few years ago started what they call a community of nuns. They live together, wear habits, are vegetarians, pray together the Liturgy of the Hours, tend the garden, and sometimes give spiritual direction and retreats to visitors. They do not take jobs in the cities nor leave the convent except when necessary for supplies, etc. or when they attend the nearby Byzantine Catholic Church and take care of a shrine there. They say they are in the process of awaiting canonical approval and that they are the only community of their type currently in the U.S. I am wondering whether they would presently be considered a skete ? smile

Blessings,

Mary Jo>new to the term skete also.

I knew you would punish us with that one; it was sort of irresistable... biggrin
