Dear Sharon,

Well, I am trying not to cloud the issue here . . .

There is an old Orthodox tradition, which the Old Believers still follow, where when a Priest is censing in Church, we are to extend our arms and pray:

Thy Good Spirit will lead me in a righteous path.

I love that!

Friends,

Christ is Risen!
Glory to Jesus Christ!

I am late reading this thread. And this response is not about incense it is about the use of "whacko" in the above quote. While I am neither Old Calendarist nor Greek and I do believe that the jurisdictional divisions that exist in Orthodoxy are, at best, shameful, calling a rather well respected monastery whacko or even calling the jurisdiction whacko is not charitable.

I had stopped reading posts on this forum some time ago due to this kind of lack of charity. I may need to do that again!

Bob,

People in "the know" generally do not respect HT Monastery.

Now if someone attacks Fr. Ephraim's monasteries, I'll get mad!

Hey,

Taking a different look at the problem. I have permission from my priest to use menthol cough drops, like vicks with menthol, during Liturgy when the incense is really strong. The menthol not only affects the cough, but the stomach, and is soothing, it relaxes my cough reflex to the smoke from the incense. Also the heart reflex gets involved with it and causes the reaction to the insence, the menthol helps to relax it also.

You might also ask the deacon or alter servers to make sure the excess powder is off of it, this produces an unneccessary amount of smoke.

Thank you all for your responses. Hopefully I'll be able to disuade my wife from her "zero tolerance policy" when it comes to incense smile
