For the first question, I voted that it was a combination of the choices, so I'll explain: when I first came to the Byzantine rite, it was both because I wanted to "escape the horror", but also because I was embracing Byzantine worship and spirituality. The more I learn, the more I love it.

For the second question, I voted that I would go Orthodox if I did not have access to a Byzantine Catholic church. For those of you who know me, that shouldn't come as a big shock. Myself personally, I just don't spiritually fit in the West.

I can't answer your first question because my situation isn't listed.

Karen, Karen, Karen ... You do like to stir things up don't you.

Okay - I came to the Eastern Rite by accident. I have friends who are traditionalist Catholics. The wife grew up attending a Byzantine parish (though she is canonically Roman Catholic).

In talking to them about their beliefs and preferences she mentioned they regularly attend a Byzantine parish. Knowing nothing at all about the Eastern Rites (I'm a recent convert to the RCC) I was curious about the differences.

I attended the Divine Liturgy to more fully know about the Church. I stayed because it is beyond compare more beautifully, spiritually fulfilling and meaningful than anything else I've ever seen.

As for what I would do if there were no options for an Eastern Rite parish in my area. Well ... This won't surprise anyone who knows me (least of all you), I would become Orthodox.

In fact, I may end up doing that even if I have an Eastern Rite parish option.

If no BCC where available I would attend an Orthodox church and rush over to the nearest RCC to get communion and leave.

OOOOH Karen - doesn't really apply to me either.

I became EC but how I got here is not listed [ well it wasn't straightforward, admittedly ]

And there's no doubt that should anything happen to my Parish I would have a real problem.

I'm hoping to visit our Greek Orthodox Cathedral soon

Hey you! smile

I guess yours would fall under the fourth choice then-- you came over because you like it.

The friends you speak of would probably fall under the third choice.

And as for you "doxing", I'm falling over with shock. Nah, not really, actually. biggrin

Karen

LOL! wink Why not, that's what a lot of them do anyway... show up late, receive communion, and walk out the door. Maybe they're all going to the Orthodox liturgy? eek

Of course, Karen, another option would be to start an Eastern Catholic mission in your area!

I know personally the powerful appeal of doxing, but if you get permission from your bishop, why not start having lay led Typica services instead of going to either the Latin or the Orthodox churches?

I know you are not in that situation right now, but I think it should be a consideration. Maybe its just me, but I'm a big believer in building community where you can.

Hi Gordo, thanks for the suggestion.

I didn't know you could do that. I'd personally love to do something like that, but I'm not sure that my particular bishop would allow it. It couldn't hurt to ask.

Lay led Typica services? What would we do about liturgies--- we'd need a priest. Oy vey... eek

I was a United Methodis minister who was never Latin Catholic and joined the BC Church. If there were no BC Churches I'd Dox. I did not vote because my situation is not represented.
