Dear Dave you said: Apparently the snakes are New Calendarists since they arrive on or around August 15 for the Dormition. Hmmm! I wonder what the Old Calendarists say about all this? Zenovia

Zenovia I would think that the fact that the legions of the evil one appear on the New Calendar speaks much for the validity of the Orthodox Calendar!!! (EG!!) Alexandr

Dear Alex, Stop slithering! Now to say something about Kefalonia. The movie 'Correli's Mandolin' takes place on Kefalonia, and it is certainly beautiful. Both of my grandchildren have been guests on the island. I'll have to ask them about the snakes. The island was occupied by ten thousand Italians, and a few hundred Germans during the war. When Italy surrendered, the head of the Italian forces decided that he would insure his mens safety by obeying the Germans and giving up their arms. In the meantime, the Germans kept sending more and more troops to the island. The English had intercepted the German code and knew the Germans intended to kill the Italians, but if they were to warn the Italians, the Germans would have been aware that the English, (oops sorry! I mean the British, or those from the UK), knew how to decode their messages...so they weren't warned. The Italians were all killed...all ten thousand of them, without being able to put up a fight, or to hide. After that, there was a disasterous and cruel civil war between the communists and loyalists, and when the war ended, a devastating earthquake. Now a little personal story about Kefalonia from my mother. She said that when my grandfather was ready to sail on a ship, the curses and blasphemy of the sailors from Kefalonia so frightened him that he refused to sail. I guess that has all changed now...or at least hopefully it has. We wouldn't want the snakes to stop coming. Zenovia

I will have to look for the movie.
Thank you for the history lesson. That is so sad. Now what did he mean by the curses I wonder?
Someday I will get the video on the snakes.

Thank God these are not poisonous snakes. However I would be with ByzanTN in that blur on the horozon. Snakes is snakes to me. The new miracle would be the 2 guys who ran on the sea back to the Greek mainland. Many very nice photos here as usual in the Republic of the Hellenes. I will have to go and check it out one day. It is on my must do list.

Too bad that in Captain Corelli's Mandolin, the female protagonist (Penelope Cruz) isn't Greek, and the male protagonist (Nick Cage) is only half Italian! And, hey, Cap'n Corelli survived! Logos Teen

Dear Logus Teen one more thing: After reading the book, I kept thinking about all those Italian boys being shot in cold blood, and couldn't sleep for two weeks. How horrible! Zenovia

james I absolutely adore the movie too, Jakub! I am a bit of a sentimental type, so, no matter how many times I see it, I cry... and cry.... and cry! Regards, Alice

Are these the same snakes that St. Patrick kicked out of Ireland?

The VHS "Holy Snakes of the Virgin Mary" is available in an eBay store for $16.90 (plus shipping, I imagine). Just type in the title in the search and it will pop up. Amazon.com lists it as "currently not available." Hope this helps. Sounds like a fascinating phenomenon.
