Where can I find the Romanian Divine Liturgy in music. I've been trying to translate orthodox hymns in slavonic, but the cadenta and sylabes of the language are not compatible with my Spanish language, but the Romanian and Spanish languages have the same sylabes and cadenta, so I the translation will not disturb the pureness of the hymns.

Can you imagine the Divine Liturgy sung in spanish?

JC,

The Divine Liturgy has already been translated into Spanish and is used in the Eparchy of Van Nuys. If you contact thier chancery or the monks of Holy Resurrection I am sure they could send you a copy. Also, one of my fellow deacon candidates is of Mexican heritage and at Liturgy he sang a few Slavonic hymns in Spanish that were quite beautiful.

In Christ,
Lance, deacon candidate

Please try to explain.

Some cantors in the Eparchy of Van Nuys say that they were recently told by their pastor not to sing anything in Spanish. Is this something that is going to be throughout the Eparchy in the Southwest or just an isolated case? Thank you for clearing up any confusion about this.

Ludmilla,

I'd hazard a guess that it was just that pastor.

We have a 1000 year tradition of Liturgy in the language of the people. Very few Hispanic folks speak Old Church Slavonic at home wink

I'm not sure but I think the Spanish translation referred to is online at:

Oh well, if that's the case it seems that the "spirit of John Ireland" has returned.

However, it's understandable, if they tried to get rid of traditional Orthodox languages (Romanian, Slavonic, Greek, Arabic) it's absurd that they would support indirect languages, that are used in the Church because of inmigration.

Maybe they think it's very divisive, to have, in addition to the original liturgical languages, all the other languages product of Orthodox diaspora (Spanish, Portuguese, French), etc.

In Mexico, for example, I don't think people would like to have English for liturgy.

Glory to Jesus Christ!

Dear JC Lev:

I bet you could find a tape or cd of the liturgy in Romanian from either:

1. The Romanian Greek-Catholic Eparchy of St. George (Canton, OH): Tel.: 330-493-9355; Fax: 330-493-9963; www.RomanianCatholic.org: [romaniancatholic.org] omarginean@sbcglobal.net

or

2. The Romanian Orthodox Episcopate in Jackson, MI (517) 522-4800; www.roea.org [roea.org]

Another source might St. Vladmir Seminary's bookstore: check out www.svots.edu [svots.edu]

Good luck!

God bless,
Christopher

Thank you for your answers. I had figured that it must have just been that pastor.
