Yeah Alex I did call myself a theologian but Henry told me not to say that anymore and he's right anyways its not like I've earnt it. Maybe someday... Anyways, nobody offended me so its fine. I've developed a more relaxed manner recently thats all and been more extrovert. Indeed, you're right Alex its not very British. But I'm afro-carribean ethnically so I'm only culturally English. As much as I do love the manners that this country fosters and its unique sense of satirical humour I also have a streak of personality all my own. Jamaicans are a bubbly bunch You're right about people's identities Angel (you dont mind if I use a diminutive there, right...right? ) and in future I'll make it a point not to be so uncouth, and show respect where respect has been earnt. Hehe, reminds me of my Oxford interview at Greyfriars. I was asked about the Virgin Birth and replied to the question that if it could happen by IVF that a virgin could concieve why was it unreasonable to think God could do the same? Anyways thats just my way at times. I'm sorry if I've upset anyone. Nobody upset me so its all good. Between the Blessed Virgin Mary, Sts Francis de Sales and Seraphim of Sarov (with a little help from something Benny Groeschel said recently on EWTN) I've been given a new lease in life. I'm liking where I am interiorly at the moment and I wouldnt risk leaving that place by getting mad at y'all (especially for no reason). Toodles Myles

Straight from south London: "Safe" "Acquire a peaceful spirit, and around you thousands will be saved."--St Seraphim of Sarov. This man was extraordinary? This is off topic I know and I should put it under the thread I started on him. But where was he buried? Where are his relics? Anybody got an icon of St Seraphim that I could see?

St Seraphim's great But liberals arent. The Lib Dems want to ban all faith schools and legalise many things contrary to the natural law. There's no way we can support them. That being said Labour will win everyone knows that.

That being said Labour will win everyone knows that. AAAArgh - we had enough politics with the American elections - let's not start it all over again. Please Myles - save the arguments for the College bar in the evenings Anhelyna being terribly non-political

That being said Labour will win everyone knows that. What more would we have to argue about in light of the fact that Blair will obviously win?

Dear Myles, St Seraphim of Sarov is also remarkable in terms of his great devotion to Our Lady. He recited daily the "Rule of the Mother of God" or 150 Hail Mary's divided every ten with an "Our Father." (Sound familiar? ). He once prayed one thousand days and one thousand nights upon a rock in the forest - people have since chipped off its pieces as relics. His Relics are in St Petersburg. They were taken by the Soviets, but then they disappeared, only to reappear with the fall of the Soviet Union. His famous miraculous icon is "Our Lady, Joy of all Joys" and is a Western-style Annunciation icon with Our Lady with hands crossed at the moment of the Incarnation. He prayed before this icon all his life and it became the MOST popular icon in Russia and Ukraine during the Soviet era (he also predicted the rise and fall of communism). He wrote a letter to the "fourth Tsar to visit Sarov" - and it was Tsar St Nicholas II, predicting his death etc. He was tonsured a Monk at the Kyivan Caves Lavra in Ukraine and was blessed to go to Sarov by the Abbot who was in reality a woman - St Dosithea of the Kyivan Caves. He fed the wild animals in his forest hermitage who knew and loved him - he has been called the "St Francis of the East." Attacked by robbers and beaten until deformed, St Seraphim refused to press charges, but actually appeared in court to press for his attackers' release. There is a wonderful book about him entitled, "Flame in the Snow." He also preached a lay rule of prayer - the Our Father 3 times, the Hail Mary 3 times and the Nicene Creed once - and this is to be recited morning, noon and night. In between, one is to say the Jesus Prayer incessantly and even when one is talking to someone, one is to continue with "Lord have mercy." He also insisted on the recitation of the Rule of the Mother of God daily for everyone. Alex

They are now in Diveyevo Convent: In 1991, the relics were found in the basement of a former anti-religious museum in St Petersburg and returned to Diveyevo. On another thread, I posted a picture of Metropoliton Laurus venerating Saint Seraphim's relics in Diveyevo; see: http://www.russianorthodoxchurch.ws/01newstucture/pagesru/novosti2004/vnn.html Originally posted by Orthodox Catholic: He was tonsured a Monk at the Kyivan Caves Lavra in Ukraine and was blessed to go to Sarov by the Abbot who was in reality a woman - St Dosithea of the Kyivan Caves.
This contracdicts every life of Saint Seraphim I've ever read; where did you hear or see this? Everything I've read suggests that Saint Seraphim never ventured far from his birthplace, and Ukraine would be quite far. I was tonsured a reader at the monastery that the founder of the Kieven Caves Monastery, Saint Anthony, became a monk, and at Jordanville, there is a reliquary with relics of 88 saints of the Monastery of the caves, so I have a devotion to the saints of that holy place; yet, I never heard of Saint Seraphim have been there. This is news to me! At any rate, there is a short life of Saint Seraphim and several icons at: http://www.firebirdvideos.com/saintslives/lifeofseraphim.htm Christ is Risen! Photius, Reader

Dear Photius, That St Seraphim of Sarov was tonsured at the Kyivan Caves Lavra can be found on the website of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Moscow Patriarchate - especially the articles dedicated to the anniversary last year etc. I did not know this either, but special celebrations were held at the Lavra to honour "its most famous tonsured Monk." It's there on the website somewhere - or else you could write to them for further info. The Rule of the Mother of God is in Russian on a few websites I've come across, it is also mentioned explicitly in the book: Staretz Zechariah: An Early Soviet Saint in Chapter Six. St Seraphim Zvezdinsky's interpretation of that Rule is also given there. The Rule of 150 "Hail Mary's" is also given in the 2003 edition of "Russian Orthodoxy" published at Moscow and a list of themes for meditation (like the RC mysteries of the Rosary) is also provided. I've done an English translation of St Seraphim's Rule here, but don't remember where it is! In addition, the Orthodox Word published an edition on St Seraphim that included an article on this Rule of Prayer - one of four Prayer Rules that St Seraphim of Sarov has left us. Alex

I love the Rule and pray it daily. I can't wait to get started on it first thing in the morning when I wake up!! Alex
