Pope makes first window appearance In the 15-minute appearance, Benedict, wearing a white cassock, issued a call for continued efforts to bridge the gap between Catholics and Orthodox. Wishing "from the heart" a happy Easter to Orthodox Christians, Benedict said that God "is asking us to travel decisively down the path toward full unity." John Paul had made better relations with the Orthodox a main goal of his 26-year-long papacy. http://edition.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/europe/05/01/pope.sunday.ap/ This article was found on http://www.siritdaily.com a very orthodox Catholic Blog Pani Rose

I read about this on CNN.com and was very much impressed with the Holy Father's strong will to connect the Eastern churches with the West. I think (most) all of us in this forum support this, but I hope times don't change too quickly.

Pani Rose Hi Pani Rose, Good news! Thanks for posting this. The Holy Father is not wasting any time and is being forthright in expressing his desire for working towards unity. I missed news like this on my trip and am now catching up. Blessings to you and Deacon Stan. Mary Jo

I reckon that if he can negotiate some sort of settlement on the jurisdictional issues the schism will end.

This is very encouraging. Of course, what the other side's response to this call remains to be seen. But with prayer, I am sure this Schism will end.

Perhaps I'm still a bit short-sighted and overzealous as a new Catholic, but... we've been divided for almost a thousand years! In my humble opinion, unification cannot happen soon enough!

In my humble opinion, unification cannot happen soon enough! Just keep in mind how fast Communism in Eastern Europe fell, once that first brick came out of the Berlin Wall. I never thought I'd see the fall of Communism in Europe in my lifetime. When God decides the world is ready to make changes, He can do it in a blink of an eye! Tammy

I agree, God can do things rapidly when He wants to. But I think we, on the Catholic side, tend to minimize some of our differences with the Orthodox. I often have the feeling those differences are taken much more seriously on the Orthodox side. Catholics tend to take the view that we are 95% similar so lets agree to disagree on the 5% and get on with it. I think the Orthodox see the devil in that 5%.

I still think that if Papa Ratzi can work out an ecclesiological settlement all will be well.

Dear Myles,
The person you refer to as "Charlie boy" has more university degrees and university teaching experience than the two of us (and several others) put together.
FYI.

Geeze and to think you guys used to tell me to lighten up. I am a teenager after all you cant expect me to act with the sobriety of an adult. Still, ok, no more diminutives. I guess I was naive to think I'd be interpreted as being friendly by people twice my age. I think indeed I'd do well to keep in mind the generation gap between myself and the rest of you in future.

Dear Myles, When you first came on here, I believe you styled yourself a "Theologian." Is that correct? Have I imagined that? It's O.K. to call me whatever, but I defer to Charles (and Professor Dan Lauffer). I don't think that "Charlie boy" would be very complimentary in your British English usage either . . . I remember when, during a visit of HRH Prince Charles here, they pictured him as a "Sunshine Boy" with his shirt off. The British press took a fit and said that Canada had turned our "Charles into a Charlie!" Anyway, sorry if I offended you. Please accept my apology, one Royalist-Papalist to another . . . Alex

Myles The real thing about this Site is that we can disclose as much or as little about ourselves as we wish. An ID [ such as mine ] for the forum can hide a lot of details. It was almost a year before I felt comfortable enough to use my real name [ and then Alex gave me a new one ] There are many folk here , as I'm sure you have guessed , who hide their real identities - anonymity allows them to state their thoughts freely without any comeback. Even if we do guess their ID - we allow them that freedom. Much can be said by PM that it would not be wise to state in public. To be perfectly honest I have made many good friendships here that I really value - folk who will be honest with me and give me good advice. Give it time - we are a family - and you will soon realise that - a family - not just some good people who talk with each other. Generation gap does not really matter - but courtesy to other users does. I have posted on a few other Fora - but truly I can say there is nothing else that approaches Byzcath. Anhelyna
