Doamne ajuta - the Lord help us!
Greetings everyone. I arrived back home yesterday after a successful trip to Romania. All went well, to say the least. Experiencing Romania in general, and the Orthodox church in particular, is amazing. Being at the Nicula Monastery for the "hram" on Dormition, with perhaps 200,000 other people, was intense and incredible. Meeting and working with college students of A.S.C.O.R. (Orthodox students association) and campers was a blast. Yes, I plan on going again!
Thank you all for your prayers! As requested by Admin, I prayed for the whole Forum community at all the holy sites and monasteries, and during our summer camp.
Sorry, Alex, I didn't find what you wanted.
Best regards to all,
Dave

Doamne ajuta, frate Dave. God help, brother Dave.
Well, I am glad that you saw a fragment of this country. There are many riches, but to be found a person must strive really. Just remember this, please. There are indeed special places...
May God bless you, Dave, to continue your work and your life, always in Christ. Amin.
Unworthy, Marian +

Dave,
Did you travel through Northern Romania along the Tisza (Satu Mare, Sighet) area of the old Hungarian Counties of Szatmar and Maramaros?

Ung, My team went into Maramures/Maramaros for a couple hours to briefly visit the Rohia Monastery. This monastery has a new (and still unfurnished on the inside) wooden church in the Maramures style, perched on the top of a mountain. The view was amazing. My dad asked if I ran into any Rusyn enclaves; sorry, no such luck. After being in northwestern Romania, I can definately say that there is a common "Carpathian spirituality" spanning throughout the areas of the old Austro-Hungarian empire along the Carpathian Mountains. This was very apparent at the pilgrimage to Nicula: the nighttime procession with banners, flower-adorned processional crosses, and the wonder-working icon, all while 200,000 people held candles and sang two paraliturgical hymns (both slightly reminiscent of "Stradalna Mati") was as "nash" as it gets... except in Romanian. Doamne Iisuse Hristoase, Fiul lui Dumnezeu, miluieste-mă pe mine păcătosul. Dear Dave, Welcome back home! I hope you had the opportunity to learn some Romanian chant. {Says the one who enjoys singing ocassionally at the local Romanian Orthodox Church, in spite of not know much Romanian. } Σώσον, Κύριε, καί διαφύλαξον ηάς από τών Βασιλιάνικων τάξεων!

Hi Kobzar, I got to hear a lot of chant in Romanian, but for the most part it was modern Greek-style Byzantine (or "psaltic" as they like to say) chant; this was true at most of the monasteries and among the ASCOR students (who sang the services at the camp and at all the village churches we visited). I only heard a few things in the local Transylvanian chant. It seems that the clergy prefer Byzantine chant, and I was told that it is in an effort to differentiate the Orthodox from the Greek Catholics (whom the Orthodox clergy for the most part really really dislike). The villages, though, still sing Transylvanian style, congregationally, with a cantor. I'm a little bummed that I didn't get to experience an average service in Transylvanian chant, but what can ya do. In the end, I did wind up learning "Cuvine se cu adeverat" (It is truly meet) in Byzantine Tone 1, the Romanian version of "Ton Despotin" in Transylvanian style, some campfire songs, and a couple other things. Pretty cool stuff! Dave

Hi Mike,
I'm going back to Keuka next Saturday, although I don't know if I'll be in church next Sunday (they have academic check-in on Sunday morning) but I will definately be there on September 4!

Ah, the prodigal son has returned. Let's kill the fatted calf and break out the good chocolate. BTW, thanks for those prayers. Charles

Fatted calf sounds fine, but please, no cabbage. I never thought I could say this, but I've had my fill of cabbage for a while. Dave
