Just out of curiosity, how many Byzantine Catholic or Orthodox temples are there out there with the traditional set-up of open floor space in the Sanctuary and "contingency seating" (pews, benches or chairs) at the periphery only ?
In my surfing through the various Eastern Christian parish websites I only found a couple - St. Elias Ukrainian Catholic Church in Bramptom, ON and an Old-Ritualist Russian Orthodox Church somewhere - I've forgotten where - in the Eastern U.S. Most all the others - even Orthodox temples - have pews or chairs all the way across the Sanctuary a la the Romans and Protestants.
Just curious ! God Bless.

Sam, The Lord may forgive you for raising this topic, but some posters here might have more trouble doing so . For 16, count 'em - 16 , pages of discussion on this topic in this year alone, in a single thread, see: Pews, yet again A light year in 2003, only 4 pages: Pews 7 pages in 2002: Pews 2002 5 pages in 2001: Pews 2001 And I only selected the threads in which pews were obviously the main topic - I didn't touch the threads in which one or more posts on pews were buried in amongst other related topics of discussion. Enjoy! Many years, Neil

Play nicely, children, and pretend that we didn't see this...and let's let those volumes of other responses stand on their own, OKAY?

Can't we just give a straight answer to Sam's straightforward question?

Not pews again - Please folk let's get Holy Week over and indeed the Joys of Pascha before we start the wars again. We all know that pews are a knotty problem :p Anhelyna -- the Latin who likes to stand

Good Heavens ! What a can of worms I've opened on what's obviously already a well-worn topic. Guess I should have checked the various Forum topics more closely.
Anyway, here's my two cents worth....
PEWS...P.U. !!!
God Bless,
Sam

I agree 1000%! Pews are "P.U." Originally posted by ByzCathDad: PEWS...P.U. !!! Sam I defy anyone to pray the Great Canon in their pews (or even the presanctified {heck, or even regular Sunday Divine Liturgy})! I was a "good thing" we did not have that many people out for the Great Canon, the aisle were jam-packed! Pews - bad, bad, bad. Herb -with a bruise on his forehead for trying to make a small metania whilst in the pew.

There is some guy in the Toronto area who is willing to take a chain saw to your church pews and book cases out of them.

Actually I know the guy in Toronto - and he's serious!
I just can't get the rest of the parish to agree .... yet!
(of course, the guy's lucky enough to be a parishioner of St. Elias in Brampton - pewless and fancy free (free for prayer that is!))

Well, let's see. Very few churches of the Church Abroad have pews or the equivalent. I cannot even imagine any Old Ritualist church having them. Greek Old Calendar churches are wildly unlikely to have pews. The Ukrainian Greek-Catholic church in Hunter, New York (which is lovely) had no pews the last time I was there. Nor does the Sophia Chapel at Saint Nicholas Church, Toronto. That's all off the top of my head. In Europe pews are far less common. Incognitus
