Dear Incognitus,

With the amount of wine and cognac that is being served, all should be in good spirits. biggrin

Wishing you a blessed Nativity.

People from Eastern Europe have a meatless meal on Christmas Eve anyway. It is called the "Vigilia", and consists of 7-12 courses.

I honestly didn't expect this thread to be so instantly popular - thank you, everyone.

My own favorite Christmas Eve supper is the Italian version - they serve twelve different kinds of fish and sea food. Scrumptious!

Alas, I cannot go to Australia and partake of the delights promised in that menu myself. Another time, perhaps. Incidentally, I don't know how many people my friends are expecting for dinner - but there is certainly enough wine to float the Titanic!

Every congratulation to those keeping the feast on the new calendar.

To add to the wine/food pairings:
Brut champagne accompanies muchadlo as though they were made for each other. And it works perfectly with bobalky too.

Question: what happens to vegetarians who go to restaurants in Hungary?

Answer, from the waiter: "You don't want to eat meat? Romania is that way!"

I see lots of cheese included in that menu, definitely not vegan fare!

Here at the monastery, we have a monk who is a vegan and he had tofu and vegetarian chili for Christmas dinner while the rest of us dined on Prime Rib, shrimp and tortellini soup.

Oh well, " De gustibus non est disputandum " wink

To quote the chorus of a song by Arlo Guthrie:

"And it's all because they didn't eat their vegetables;
And it's all because they didn't eat their vegetables;
or maybe
they didn't chew them properly
if they did."

Actually, champagne is made for eggs benedict!

I once went on a liturgy date with a woman, with breakfast following. When I ordered eggs benedict and champagne she said "Are you sure you're from the Midwest?" biggrin

A meatless feast? How un-Christian. After all, our faith is based on the symbolism of the Temple sacrifices, the Lamb of God offered for our sins [remember that the sacrifices were consumed!]
What next? The father in the parable of the Prodigal Son calling the servants to prepare the fatted cauliflower?

Dear Daniel,
Being a devout carnivore myself, I fully agree with you. There's something about the fatted cauliflower that fails to attract me.
