Most likely Alice. I was told that the Scotch-Irish (not Irish Catholic immigrants of the famine and then turn of the 20th century folk) are part of the reason speech is like this. That they often took the letter r out of words, like horse=hoss, curse=cuss (like down in Maryland and south people cuss, they don't swear or curse). Just my two cents.

Thanks, Pani Rose. I enjoyed laughing at that!

I find regional accents interesting.

Uv kuh-wars, we Southerners speak Englush thuh way iss suhpost tuh be spokuhn! wink

I'm sure that sentence reads easily to people like Pani Rose who are from the Deep South!

Now, if y'all will excuse me, I'm fixin' to cut out the lights and go to bed. I usta could stay up later, but not these days! smile

Dear Pani Rose,

Are you implying "nebby" isn't really a word! smile

I grew up in the East End of Pittsburgh and we used to take a streetcar to "Easliberdy". I'd go to "Paurit" games at Forbes Field and sit in right field just to watch "Clamenti" play. I was probably 12 or 13 years old when I realized that "St. Karen's Church" was actually named for the male Saint Kieran.

For old time's sake, I think I'll have a "can of pop and a chiptam sanwidge" for lunch today. smile

Lost&found,

Is it "Cincinnati" or "Cincinnata"?

Up here we use the former, but south of Interstate 80 there's no telling what you'll hear!

My sister went to college in Wisconsin and she quickly learned that a "water fountain" is only used to make wishes and throw coins into. If one is thirsty one goes to, of course, the BUBBLER!

D'Oh! eek

Quick quiz:

Q: What is the difference between someone from Canada and someone from Brooklyn?

A: When you meet someone from Canada they say, "How you doin', ay?" When you meet someone from Brooklyn they say, "Ay, how you doin'?" biggrin

Dear Paulnik,

Cincinnati is too long a name. We just call it Cincy and leave it at that! If someone asks what is Cincy, then we have to pronounce the whole name, then it is Sin-si-nata, O-high-O. (but only if you are from the country or close to da riva biggrin

Also, we called yous town Cheecawgo, Ill a noise.

Last but not least, if you make some people mad, they will call the Po leese (accent on the PO like the riva in Firenze) on ya. smile

End that is with a more gooder etucashun.

Dear Alice,

Who was that sleepy Dutch singer?

Wazzit Rip Van Halen? On a more serious note, are there any Dutch shops in Brooklyn? Can you get Dutch Loaf?

Hi Michael,

As far as I know, the Dutch left little more than names for schools, streets, dutch colonial style homes, and that famous accent! biggrin LOL!

BTW-what is Dutch Loaf?

Dear Alice,

Dutch Loaf is a blend of pork and beef seasoned with spices and formed into a coarse textured loaf. The loaf is smoked over hardwoods for added flavor. It is intended for the loaf to be sliced thin and used for luncheon meat. I discoved it can also be referred to as Old Fashioned Loaf.

Good stuff, if you are a baloney eater. biggrin

I don't know - but it's possible that the "Dutch" in Dutch Loaf refers the Pennsylvania Dutch, who are really Germans (Deutsch).
