This has just been lent to me by my SF - a wonderful treasure trove. the subtitle says it all A scriptural and Liturgical Commentary on the Calendar of the Orthodox Church There are 7 sections - each referring to a time in the Church Year. For someone like me - who receives no teaching in his/her parish because of language usage - this is a mine of information . I have just put this book on my ' Absolutely must get my own copy ' list Anhelyna - who got back from her wee trip today

Thank you, Anhelyna, for the reference ! It sounds good ! So I looked it up online. I found it listed for $16 at St. Vladimir\'s Seminary Press [svspress.com] Their webpage shows: The Year of Grace of the Lord Monk of the Eastern Church On the basis of worship of the Orthodox Church, The Year of Grace of the Lord takes the reader through the Sundays and feast days from the beginning of the year in September to the time of its completion after Pentecost. It is a guide to the scriptural readings and prayers of the calendar year and reveals the spiritual growth in Christ that is opened to us in them. In the author's words, the liturgical year is "an abridgement of the history of salvation."
A helpful list of reference notes, including historical and theological material, is given at the end of each chapter. This book will be of interest to anyone who wishes to know more about the development and pattern of the Orthodox liturgical year.
The Author: "A Monk of the Eastern Church" is the well-known pseudonym for Father Lev Gillet (1893-1980), who authored numerous volumes of biblical and spiritual reflections. United to the Orthodox Church in 1928, Father Lev Gillet was deeply imbued with Eastern monastic spirituality. In 1948 he was appointed chaplain to the Fellowship of St Alban and St Sergius, dedicated to the work of Christian unity.

This book is arguably one of the best books dealing with the Byzantine liturgical year. It is replete with quotes from the services themselves, just a wonderful book all around. FDD

Diak,
A little off topic but have you heard if there is any news about Father Lev being glorified?? I know he is controversial in some quarters but he is certainly someone whose life and writings influnced me to become Orthodox but also to keep a love for my Catholic heritage and the unity of our Churches.

Indeed. Along those lines, is there a biography of Fr. Lev available ? The only biogrpahy I read of him was in a foreword, by Bishop Kallistos Ware, to Fr. Lev's "The Jesus Prayer." Yet, that was impressive. -- John

OK - it's slightly more expensive than if I had bought it from Light 'n Life or St Vlads - but I'm not being hit with the truly horrific postage from the USA Once it's here, on SF's instructions, I'm to lend his copy to my GodPapa
