Today's Albuquerque Journal ran a story and photo of Fr Chris Zugger of OLPH, blessing a car on the feast of St. Elias.
Further in a separate box within the article was an invitation for all to bring their cars for a blessing after this coming Sunday's Divine Liturgy.
Do Byzantine Churches typically announce an all comers blessing for automobiles?
This event sounds like evangelization.

We do but we haven't actually advertized it. I'm waiting for one of those cars to leap up into heaven once it's blessed.

"Beam me up, Scotty." (In remembrance of actor James Doohan, who passed away Wednesday.) Dan, Seems that OLPH called the newspaper and a reporter was sent to the church for a news story and photo. Ask and you shall receive. Best regards in our Lord, Paul

We blessed cars on Tuesday night. I have a remote for my car and if you hit the lock button twice it makes the car beep once. When Fr. Tom came to my car I hit the button twice and it beeped. It was quite funny. Fr Tom thought it was saying Amen or talking back. I said of course it's talking back it's a teenager's car and that is what we do, talk back.

We blessed cars on Sunday at my parish (OCA). I parked my car next to the sacristy door, and during Communion, I slipped out the back, turned my car on, rolled down my windows, cranked up the volume, and then started playing my CD of Russian Church Bells. You could faintly hear it when our procession left the church, but when Father got to my car, the bells started ringing loudly, and Father started laughing. Dave

As far as I know, the car I last blessed hasn't been involved in any accidents... due to the fact that the driver is a careful driver; he's the blessed one! But he and the family (the wife is Muslim) felt it was a good thing to do. Why not! blessing, wg

CIX!
Our mission community in Montgomery County, Maryland, will have the car blessing this coming Sunday. AND... it appears we are going to have a writer and photographer from "The Washington Post" on hand!

Glory to Jesus Christ!
The blessing of cars has been a fun event for our families. After the Divine Liturgy has been concluded, the priest announces Gentlemen (and women), start your engines.
The priest, deacon and servers proceed to the outside front of the church with kadilo and blessed water. The people drive by, one at a time, and receive the blessing. Its quite a parade and the faithful are happy to participate in this way.

Thanks for your posts, all of you! Our roads are safer now. I've had my house blessed by a Byzantine priest and my pets blessed by my parish priest on St Francis of Assisi's feast day. My cars are not blessed. I better have them blessed soon. My 17-year-old daughter is learning to drive. Paul

One year, the vehicle blessings were listed as "the blessing of fiery chariots." Needless to say, many of us could not stop the giggles. I can assure you Corollas have never been "fiery."

One catholic church puts one of those plastic thingy on the windshield - like the one that the mechanic puts on showing when your next oil change is due.
On the church one - it says "This car has been blessed at such and such Catholic Church". In case of an accident, it's another way of letting the police/paramedics know the victim(s)' faith.

In addition to the new passenger van (necessitated by the birth of Mary Macrina [ squarezero.org] , our seventh child), I had my road bike and mountain bike blessed this Tuesday. I've had some fairly serious crashes on the mountain bike, including one right before Divine Liturgy a couple months ago. I need all the blessings I can get! -- Eric Scheidler

Our Lady Of Perpetual Help parish's blessing of motor vehicles yesterday was covered by a local TV station. That parish must have a good publicist!! The video showed Fr Chris blessing cars including the TV station's SUV. Paul
