This seems to be a lot or problem for some people. I came across this link by accident. You know there must be something to this accident thing. I have noticed here of late some absolutely wonderful sites that posters are posting that were found by accident. I am beginning to think the accidents are not accidents biggrin

Dear Pani Rose:

I am delightfully surprised to know you are surprised by these tracts put out by "Catholic Answers!"

"Catholic Answers" is the host of "Catholic Answers" Forums (relatively new as one of its sponsored activities, where we (and many others here at Byzcath) are members of its "Eastern Christianity" Forum. biggrin

It is one of the largest lay-run apostolates of Catholic apologetics and evangelization! And its "Forums" has probably the largest number of registered members and posting members at any given time of the day!

Karl Keating and his friends have been at it for more than 27 years now after fundamentalists peppered his car and all the parked cars of Catholics attending a Mass in 1979. Mr. Keating "vowed" to pepper cars of fundamentalists in return with his first tract of "Catholic Answers!"

Today "Catholic Answers" has tracts aimed at all, or nearly all, religious persuasions.

Speaking of Karl Keating. His very good book "Catholicism and Fundamentalism" (Paperback) is still out there and very good reading. A very good resource that a few could do with on their book shelf. Check it out there are comments on the book on the page. http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0898701775

It doesn't bother me or supprise me that they have a page on how to refute them. I am very thankful for the ammo. However, I have noticed from time to time that many people are upset by them So I just thought posting the info here would help biggrin

Dear Friends,

The problem with these type of tracts is that they are so anti-Catholic so as to be real hate literature.

Does not the U.S., that harbinger of human rights et al., not have laws protecting people against hate literature?

Or does the U.S. allow anti-Catholicism to go unchecked? Is this American democracy?

If one believes Rome is the cause of every major evil to have befallen the world - this is hate literature plain and simple.

Dear Alex,

The United States has been a hotbed of anti-Catholicism right from it's founding. I recently read an article which pointed out that many of the early luminaries of the founding of the republic promoted "religious freedom", except when it came to the question of "papists".They felt that giving the "papists" any freedom or position of prominence in society would result in the Pope dominating the country. The Catholic Standard & Times, newspaper of the RC Archdiocese of Philadelphia, recently ran a piece on the burning down of Catholic Churches in Philadelphia by Irish Protestants (my grandmother called them "left footers" wink ) in the 1800's, on the pretext that the Catholics were hoarding guns & ammo in the rectories. In New York City, the Ancient Order of Hibernians was originally formed to keep the "Know Nothings" (an anti-Catholic political group) from burning down Catholic Churches there.
Today, anti-Catholicism exists here not only amongst wacko fundamentalists, but even more strongly amongst the secularist Liberals who are entrenched in the highpoints of our culture (Government, the Academe, the Media, Business, Labor Unions, and even certain "mainline" "churches"). We are surrounded by a sea of Paganism. I know that Canada also has some serious issues with the latter phenomenon (i.e. same sex marriage).

In Christ,
Deacon Robert

It is interesting also that we have a public school system because of the rebellousness against Catholics having schools. People were so afraid of children being educated in our systems and that they were so superior to what others were receiving, that the publich school system was created.

actually, it's the other way around.
Catholic schools arose because the public schools at the time (first few decades of the nineteenth century) had prayers, etc. (not a bad thing until the atheists and the like started kvetching). the thing was the public schools used the King James Bible, and that for starters, ticked off the Catholics, as it was seen as a tool for turning Catholic kids away from the faith. in fact, the KJV was used at the public school I went to in Queens at the Friday assembly .Miss Brady (who I bet was Catholic), the assistant principal, would read from the Psalms to an audience overwhelmingly Catholic, with a number of Jews, and here a Protestant, there a Protestant.anyways, the Catholic school system arose in order to protect Catholic kids as well as give them an education.it took a while, but the feds finally caught up with P.S.100 long after the Bible was "outlawed" in the public schools in the sixties.now the school is chock full of Muslims, as is the whole area,so I wonder if the Koran is read at Friday assembly.
Much Love,
Jonn

My take a a former 'radical fundie, evangelical' is that it may not be so much specifically 'anti-catholic', but 'anti-papist'. Though the two are usually seen as the same, there is much difference. The idea of a 'katholic' IE universal faith is shared by much of Christendom. The idea of the "elitist, Popery of Rome, and their henchmen" (quote from anti-C literature) is what fires much anti-C sentiment. Not surprisingly, the Eastern Orthodox (who are catholic and apostolic) many times feel the same way, BUT for much different reasons. Ah, remember the 4th Crusade, the sacking of Constantinople by the Turks...with no help from the West, the pillaging of Icons, and relics , etc, etc is what I have found the adds to the fire.
The actual threat from the islamofascists is a much greater present problem, but we all to some extent live in the past. my 2 kopeks, mik
PS...Oh, yeah, some of Chick's tracks are just for that, to stir up trouble, not much grace there, eh..!
