My wife was talking to me today about a Catholic equivalent to MOPS Mother of Preschoolers [mops.org]. MOPS is a very big Protestant ministry to stay home mothers.

I did a Google for a Catholic equivalent and the only thing I could come up with was MOMS Ministry of Mothers Sharing [stpaulsmonastery.org]

Again, I did a Google and found several Roman Catholic Churches in my area have a branch of MOMS. MOMS is even listed on the official diocensian website. [orlandodiocese.org]

Well, this sounded great until I read up on MOMS. One of the first things I read was the official site (see above). That scared me to be honest. So I searched more and found this website Our Lady's Warriors [ourladyswarriors.org]
Which stated,
Quote
MOMS is the creation of Benedictine Sister Paula Hagan, of St. Paul's Monastery, St. Paul, Minnesota. It is a plan for small-groups focused on spirituality and "self-awareness". The materials are published by Resource Publications of San Jose, California.

The Resources for On-Going MOMS Groups lists works by radical feminist writers such as Sister Joan Chittister, OSB (Wisdom Distilled from the Daily), Sister Miriam Therese Winter (The Gospel According to Mary, A New Testament for Women), and Wendy Wright (Sacred Dwelling, Forest of Peace). The list is on the web site: www.osb.org/spm/momsfollowreading.html. [osb.org]

Your negative impression of the "Personal Journal" spirituality workbook was very well-founded - as a glance inside its appealing "cross-stitch" cover confirms.

It opens with a "psalm" by Edwina Gateley, of Call-to-Action fame, from her book, Psalms of a Laywoman.

Quotes from Sister Kathleen Hughes, RSCJ, (Lay Presiding: The Art of Leading Prayer), and Sister Anne E. Carr, BVM (Transforming Grace) are included, among others.

Sister Hughes, a feminist liturgist, was for many years a member of ICEL, a group that provided problematic English liturgical translations.

Sister Anne Carr is a member of the radical Catholic Women's Network, and was a signer of the infamous 1984 "pro-choice" ad in the New York Times sponsored by Catholics for a Free Choice.

The list could go on.

MOMS resources do not contain even one single reference to any work of Pope John Paul II, utterly ignoring his profound insights into the meaning of family (Familiaris Consortio), human life (Evangelium Vitae) and womanhood (Mulieris Dignitatem). Considering the purpose of MOMS, this is astonishing. (All of these are on our web site [Women for Faith and Family] , Church Documents section.)

The Catechism of the Catholic Church is not cited even once, unsurprisingly.

The idea of Catholic women getting together for fellowship, prayer and study is great. This is one of WFF's goals, in fact. But MOMS is not the answer.

We'd be glad to give you suggestions for a prayer-and-study group that would be completely faithful to Catholic teachings, and truly helpful to the members of the group.

I did some more searches and it appears that Sister Paula Hagan does indeed draw upon the works of Sister Joan Chittister (whom I think was excommunicated or censored recently).

Should I tell my wife to avoid this group? Is there an alternative organization?

I'm pretty sure my local Greek Orthodox Church has a "M.O.M.S" group. I don't remember what M.O.M.S. stands for. The closest thing that I found doing an internet search was "Moms and Tots" at Greek Orthodox Churches. I am not sure if Moms and Tots is the same thing as M.O.M.S.

You can tell her with love and compassion, as to your wanting to learn more about the group, and this is what you found. Don't tell her in a fashion of fear or condemnation, just with caution, allowing the Holy Spirit to bring about that decision through your prayer. Sometimes silence can be the best weapon.

Sounds like you have a wonderful wife that only wants the best for YOUR children, along with Christian fellowship and support. But, then you know your wife better than any of us. Pray and the Holy Spirit will lead you into all thuths.

When I lived in a large suburb there were many MOPS groups to choose from, including several at local Roman Catholic churches.
According to mops.org :

MOPS International Faith Position Statement

"MOPS International is a Christian non-profit organization that believes in working with local Christian churches/parachurches to maximize ministry opportunities to God's Kingdom. MOPS programs are chartered in churches of many different denominations and Christian traditions, but all share the common desire to reach out with the gospel of Jesus Christ and to bring glory to God in everything.

Churches/parachurches and individual MOPS ministry leaders must embrace and agree on the basic, orthodox truths of the Christian faith and the essential issues of salvation. We believe the Bible is the foundation for these truths. It is God's Word, uniquely and fully inspired by the Holy Spirit, and is authoritative on all matters on which it speaks. MOPS International is committed to telling the truth of the saving work of Jesus Christ, of God's grace to mankind, of the reality of the Trinity and the role of the Church in God's plan for the world. These foundational Christian beliefs are reflected in many of the historic church creeds."

PLEASE don't dismiss the idea of a MOPS group until you and your wife have explored the options completely. I had a great experience meeting other stay-at-home Moms, the kids were looked after in a fun, safe environment and we both made some nice friends. Our MOPS group started a babysitting cooperative so the members could occasionally get out by themselves or (gasp!) have a date with their spouse. It can be lonely staying at home when everyone else in the neighborhood is working. I sincerely hope you find a group that works for you.

Barbara
