Christ is Baptized! In the Jordan!
Hi, I haven't posted on here in a while, but my Latin Catholic Campus ministry is looking for 100% beeswax candles for the Altar to use during Lent this year... but the catch is the size we need is not exactly normal (1 1/2" x 8") and we don't need very many. Also, being a campus ministry, our budget is rather limited; but in the interest of good liturgy, what are your suggestions?
many thanks, trumpeter

Trumpeter, You could purchase some bees wax and try to make them yourselves as a lenten project (certainly cheaper for your budget) or order them from some Orthodox monastery, (at a considerately higher price.) Stephanos I

I am attempting to build a website for this store, Alpha Church Supply from their 650+ page catalog, and I have no or little experience at this. Here is a temp site, so you can contact them, believe me, they have every candle and type you can imagine. Good prices too http://www.alphachurchsupply.com/index.asp

100% pure beeswax candles are hard to find. The Monastery of the Holy Transfiguration (Byz Cath) in Redwood Valley, CA makes them as their main source of income. You can contact them directly. Their web site is www.byzantines.net/monastery [ byzantines.net]

Hierodeacon Zossima, the beekeeper at Jordanville immediately comes to mind. He made me a beeswax Troitsa, and I'm sure that he could make you whatever you wanted.

Thank you for all the options! there are more possibilities than I had realized. I've contacted a couple of the above mentioned locations and am also checking www.easternchristian.com [ easternchristian.com] as well. Making the candles ourselves is interesting idea, but I don't know that my campus minister would go for it since none of us have any candle making experience. Thanks for all the help; I'll let you know what I find. trumpeter

Trumpeter, I get candles from Mt. Sinai Orthodox Products http://www.msocp.com/candles.htm We have been doing business with them for several years now, and very much like their candles. For something as wide as you mention (I assume 1 1/2" is the diameter) you may need some custom made. I would check with Mt. Sinai or Holy Transfiguration (quoted above); one or both may be willing to do a custom order. I have started making my own as well, bartering with a friend for raw, unrendered beeswax. But that's going to take a while...
