1) Who are the saints in the background? I only can distinguish a few (St. John the Baptist is obviously always first on Jesus' right.)

2) Who are the men on Jesus' left? On the first icon, they don't have halos. On the second icon it appears to be the same group of men and they do have halos. Any idea why?

3) What is Eve's title? Is it the Just Eve? I've heard the Just Adam, but all the other OT saints I've seen as the Righteous. I haven't seen Eve's title.

Thanks for the help with these simple questions!

The law might not be interested in such trivial things, but curious children are. I promised to find out answers and was hoping someone here could provide them.

The icon shows Christ standing over the broken gates of hell (depicted as the lids of their coffins in the form of a Cross), pulling out Adam and Eve. On either side are the Old Testament kings, St. John the Baptist, Moses, the Prophet Daniel, Elias and New Testament witnesses to the Resurrection.

The only remaining question is the title ascribed to Eve. Just Eve? Righteous Eve? Something else?

Alexandr,
I wish to pass on to you the great joy you brought through your answer.

Dear Wondering,

I took a look at the icons to see if there was inscription that could be translated. There are none that I could see that could be deciphered. If I remember from the service texts correctly, most often they (Adam & Eve) are referred to in two ways. One being the our first parents or foreparents (depending on translation), and the other being their names without title. The references generally come from the Matins texts. I hope this helps.

In IC XC,
Father Anthony+

I referenced Eve through all the patristic sources I have access to, and the only title I came across was "Matka", Mother.

If you are really interested, I can reccomend the Slavonic Life of Adam And Eve.

Dear Wondering,

The Eastern Church alone gives Adam and Eve the honours of Saints (Holweck, Dictionary of Saints, 1924).

They are liturgically referred to as "First parents" "Eve, the mother of all the living" and also "St Eve" on some calendars I've seen.
