We kicked off the 100th anniversary year of our parish by saluting our Greek Catholic Martyrs during the Soviet era.

First, we showed a video from Aid to The Church in Need, called Emerging from the Catacombs, which conveys the history of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and its martyrology and persecution during the Soviet era and later, its emergence from the Catacombs in the 1990's.

After the video, Maria, one of the members of our parish, gave her testimony this past Sunday. about her experience as a Greek Catholic worshiping in the underground church during the Soviet era in Ukraine. Maria had several relatives who were priests, who were in gulags, tortured or killed. Her father, too, although not a priest, was in a gulag for roughly the first 11 years of Maria's life. She gave her testimony and took questions.

It was a most edifying session. We invited guests and had a few people outside our church come.

There is a fascinating site with lots of info on the Catholic New Martyrs of Russia: http://www.catholicmartyrs.ru/en/
Also contains biographies and photos of the martyrs who are candidates for beatification. Holy Catholic New Martyrs of Russia, pray unto God for us!

Lance,

That is wonderful to hear! Wish I could have been there for the celebration....

Saint John's history is an interesting one, as the "remnant" Greek Catholic parish after the John Ireland debacle.

Ironically its first pastor was a married priest.

Many years!

One time, the Archdiocese of Minneapolis/St. Paul wrote one of our priests, asking for a donation to build a monument for Bishop John Ireland. the Priest wrote the diocese back and said, "we already have a monument to Bishop Ireland; it is called 'St. Mary's Orthodox Cathedral!!!!!'" laugh

BRILLIANT!!!

I know a priest friend of mine who had very strong Eastern tendencies who made all sorts of Italian gestures to one of the statues of the late Archbishop when he visited the Cathedral of St. Paul!

Did you know he also helped to co-found the Polish National Catholic Church a few blocks away from St. John's?

Lance,

Sorry - I accidently posted as Daniel! (I did not check the log in). A hazzard of having father and son post at the same computer!

Glad to hear that everything went well there, though, for the celebration!
