I use Holy Cross Incense for both home and parish. http://www.tcgalaska.com/holycrosshermitage and click on "online kiosk" and then on "incense". I have never been disappointed in trying a new fragrance.

I really only want to use it in one room. Not the entire house. It would be nice if they would make incense sticks like the buddhists have. They work great for a single room.

Many health food type stores carry quality incense sticks, made of bamboo and pure oils, which are very nice. If you wish to use them, there is no reason you shouldn't. I know there are some which do not have any religious affiliation connected to them.

You could also purchase the incense sticks and ask your priest to bless them if you feel uncomfortable.

Just a thought. :-)

Funny thing about stick incense, they smell completely different than rock incense. Personally I prefer the rocks, and for some reason they don't cause me to sneeze, but stick will work just as fine I suppose if your not sneezy like me :-0)

At the RC church where I am organist, the pastor has used the traditional, black, smoky incense for years. Every time he uses it, folks complain about their allergies. I told the assistant pastor about good incense available from orthodox supply houses. He bought some, and the complaints have disappeared. Now we have the fragance, without the acrid smoke.

Why not get some frankincense. It's a light smell and it isn't overpowering. As someone who uses incense all the time I think you may be worrying too much. Break the piece of self-lite charcol into the size you want, put a rock or two on it and you'll be fine.
The smoke goes away quickly. The incense sticks would actually make more smoke than using a piece or two of incense, as these pieces only last a short time while the stick lasts longer.
