Gotta ask what it means to "value education?" All candidates will pay lipservice to that. In my opinion, someone who values effective education would do all in his power to eradicate our current compulsory schooling system and return educational choice to the parents. How's that for a view from the lunatic fringe? smile

I was looking over John McCain's positions on social issues, and it looks pretty good at first glance.

There was a time when I would have considered this view to be exactly "from the lunatic fringe." After a year of working as a substitute teacher in a public school system, maybe I've joined the lunatic fringe. I don't have a problem with mandating a minimum level of education, as I believe that it serves the good of society as a whole; however, I am now a firm believer in parental choice. Yes, I do think everyone should learn to read, write, and do basic arithmetic. As someone who loves the arts and as someone with a social sciences background, I also think that it is important to provide people with some exposure to these areas as well. But the public schools are in a terrible state of crisis and they often pose an obstacle to parents who wish to pass on Christian values to their children. Parents who wish to home school or send their children to Christian schools should be able to do so and they should get some sort of financial relief-if not in vouchers, then in tax credits. By removing their children from the public schools, they remove a financial demand on the system and since their taxes support public education, they should get something in return for that. There was a time when such thinking was almost anathema to me, but after the last year, well, like I said, I've joined the lunatic fringe.

If he runs I'll vote for the only one running that:

He has never voted to raise taxes.
He has never voted for an unbalanced budget.
He has never voted for a federal restriction on gun ownership.
He has never voted to raise congressional pay.
He has never taken a government-paid junket.
He has never voted to increase the power of the executive branch.

He voted against the Patriot Act.
He voted against regulating the Internet.
He voted against the Iraq war.

He does not participate in the lucrative congressional pension program.
He returns a portion of his annual congressional office budget to the U.S. treasury every year.

Ron Paul 2008!

Check him out. If you think the dems and the republicans are all the same, he might just change your mind.

Oh, sorry. Edited to include the main subect of post:

He is an unwavering advocate of pro-life and pro-family values.

and if they had a coherent philosophy based on rightly divided Scripture, it just may work. anything to present an alternative to neoconservatives (a.k.a armed social democrats)
