This may or may not be a failure on the part of some in the Ukrainian Catholic community. I suppose it depends on how accurate the news story is. It's possible this is not the whole truth, but it's also possible this is true. Neither the bishop nor the specific priest have commented on this publicly.

For those who don't know, Michael Ignatief ran in the leadership race for Canada's Liberal Party. That's like running for leadership of the Democratic Party in the U.S.

Catholic Priest Nominates Pro-Abor...eeting held at Ukrainian Catholic Church [lifesite.net]

By John-Henry Westen

TORONTO, April 3, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Michael Ignatieff, who gained much media attention last year as a candidate for Liberal Leader, became well known as a proponent of homosexual 'marriage'. That fact, coupled with his stand in favour of abortion, has left Catholics astonished at the news that Ignatieff's political nomination to continue as a Liberal candidate during the next election was seconded by a Catholic priest - Father Terry Lozynsky.

A press release last week from Ignatieff's office noted that Ignatieff, "Member of Parliament for Etobicoke-Lakeshore accepted the nomination to seek re-election . . . during a packed meeting on Sunday afternoon at the Christ the Good Shepherd Parish at St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Etobicoke."

The release noted that Ignatieff's nomination was seconded by "Father Terry Lozynsky" and quoted Fr. Lozynsky as saying, "Michael is a passionate, principled, and effective advocate for Etobicoke-Lakeshore."

The move to have his nomination meeting at a Ukrainian Catholic parish and have his nomination seconded by a Ukranian Catholic priest is cunning politics on Ignatieff's part. Ignatieff, a Russian who was in academia in the US, has published remarks about Ukranians which some consider offensive.

Ignatieff was rated as pro-abortion by Campaign Life Coalition, the political arm of the pro-life movement in Canada. Moreover, during the Liberal Leadership debate last year he championed same-sex 'marriage' going so far as to say he would force all Liberal MPs to support the measure by forbidding a free vote in Parliament. (see coverage: http://www.lifesite.net/ldn/2006/dec/06120106.html )

Calls to Father Lozynsky's office at the Dufferin Peel Catholic District School Board were not returned by press time. Lozynsky's Bishop, Most Rev. Stephen Victor Chmilar, Ukrainian Bishop of Toronto and Eastern Canada, was also not available for comment.

LifeSiteNews.com has learned that a Ukrainian Catholic MP who supports same sex 'marriage' is nevertheless held in good standing by the Ukranian Catholic leadership in Toronto. Borys Wrzewsnewskyj, MP (Etobicoke) was married on January 20, 2007, at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic parish on Queens St. Toronto. Sources have informed LifeSiteNews.com that the priest who was first asked to do the wedding objected since Wrzewsnewskyj remains unrepentant of his voting in favour of the law to alter the definition of marriage. Another Ukrainian Catholic priest was allowed to preside over the marriage.

I am very surprised at this article. Michael Ignatieff, is the grandson of Count Ignatieff, the Russian ambassador to Turkey at the time of the Russian Revolution. Michael himself is 3rd generation Canadian and only half Russian. He was raised Protestant, not Orthodox. Also it is true that he is hostile to Ukrainians and has written untowards remarks about Ukrainians in print. His nomination in 2006 in his riding was protested by Ukrainians openly.
I cannot find any information about Fr. Taras Lozynsky's involvement in the second nomination of Ignatieff yet in the regular press. I find this odd for a Catholic priest. I am going to a choir practise tomorrow and will try to seek further information.
As for, Borys Wrzewsnewskyj, MP (Etobicoke) he is a very fine representative of his riding and of Ukrainians in Canada in general. I think it is not proper to single him out in this way.
Archbishop Juri Kalistchuk of Toronto and Eastern Canada of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada (of which I am a member) was a guest at Wrzewsnewskjy's wedding and even spoke at the wedding.

Canadian Priest Rebuked for Endorsing Pro-abortion Politician

Toronto, Apr. 5, 2007 (LifesiteNews.com/CWN) - A Ukrainian Catholic bishop in Canada has rebuked a priest who endorsed a pro-abortion political candidate.

LifeSiteNews.com reported on April 3 that a Liberal Party meeting to nominate Michael Ignatieff had been held at the Christ the Good Shepherd Parish St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Toronto. Ignatieff, whose stands in favor of abortion and same-sex marriage are well known, had his nomination seconded by the pastor of the church, Father Terry Lozynsky.

In a press release issued April 4, and, sent to LifeSiteNews.com, Bishop Stephen Chmilar, theUkrainian Bishop of Toronto and Eastern Canada, acknowledged the incident and noted: "Father Terry was called into our office to explain his actions and we pointed out to him that based on canon law, at no time is any of our clergy to be part of, or deemed to be associated with, any political party except in the judgment of the Eparchial Bishop, if a particular law so states the need to protect the rights of the church or to promote the common good requires it."

Moreover, the Bishop Chmilar wrote: "It was also acknowledged that by promoting Mr. Ignatieff, that indirectly he was promoting the political stance on abortion and gay rights legislation that the candidate has."

"As a direct result of this breach," said Bishop Chmilar, "Father Terry has been reprimanded and a letter to all clergy informing them of the current statutes and regulations regarding involvement in any political process will be sent and reinforced."

In a letter signed by Father Lozynsky which accompanied the press release, the priest writes his fellow Ukranian Catholics saying, "I humbly apologize for the problems and embarrassment that I have caused our bishop and you my brothers and sisters." Father Lozynsky, a personal friend of Ignatieff, explains that his actions were not meant as political.

Love the YouTube clip. Fantastic. I am not Ukrainian Catholic so can anyone fill me in on the Fr. Taras Lozynsky story. Is he re-inventing himself again?
I think I heard that he was a "Young Turk" of the Ukrainan Catholic community in the 170's and then had a falling out with Fr. Tataryn. Started his won parish with his won ideas.
If he is a "friend" of Iggy, then he has become anti-Ukrainian.

That you-tube clip is an utter gem. Ignatieff, by the way, wrote an interesting book about nationalism.
