Dear DavidC:
Thanks for the update!
If "tradition" counts, the Major Archbishop will be up for the cardinalate. He is a Past President of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India.

Just as a side comment, I noticed recently that the Indian Bishop's Conference site referred to the Major-Archbishop of the Syro-Malabarese as "Archbishop Patriarch". It was in a discussion of the country's hierarchical structure, as I recollect (they've obviously been reading Ukrainian sites ). Many years, Neil

I believe both the Syro-Malankar's and Syro-Malabar's (as was the Ukrainian's) original petition was to be raised to patriarchal status.
After much reflection upon reading Archbishop Elias Zoghby's A Voice from the Byzantine East I think perhaps we have put too much stock in the title of patriarchate. By this I mean we should be more concerned with the actual form of governance and less with the title.
Among the Orthodox the chief hierarch of an autocephalous Church may be a patriarch, archbishop, or metropolitan and there is no distinction of powers among these simply precedence of honor. It is my belief we should seek to end the artificial distinctions the CCEO makes between metropolitan, major archepiscopal, and patriarchal churches. All autonomous Eastern Catholic Churches should have the same powers of governance and relation to the See of Peter.
Fr. Deacon Lance

Dear Father Deacon Lance, You are right - so what if there is a patriarchate if it is under Rome's thumb? What is positive about the UGCC current situation is that we seem to be mostly united around our patriarch in calling him such and deferring to him in most jurisdictional issues, if not all. However it happened, we've never had such unity as an EC Church. And, by the way, Cardinal Walter Kasper's spoken Russian is really, as they say, Kharashov! Alex
