Fr Serge,
As a partisan of the Habsburgs (as I myself am) you may be interested in an essay written by a former lecturer of mine, Dr Declan Downey, at my alma mater:
" Irish-European integration : The legacy of Emperor Charles V " , in European Encounters. Essays in Memory of Albert Lovett (Eds.) Howard Clarke & Judith Devlin, (University College Dublin Press, 2003)
It discusses the Treaty of Dingle 1529 between Emperor Charles V and the Earl of Desmond. Its provisions are fascinating and I remember Dr Downey once telling me the treaty wasn't revoked until the 1930s or 40s.
As a matter of interest other than the Duke of Bavaria, who are the other contenders for our throne that you mentioned. If discussing our native nobility I'm partial to the O'Brian claim, though I would not be averse to the O'Conor Donn claim either. The O'Neills are a non-starter, as the O'Neill Mors have died out (though Don Carlos O'Neill of the O'Neills of the Fews seems to have been recognised as heir to the the title of O'Neill Mor since 1991, but the succession is still anything but clear). And then there is the MacMurrough-Kavanaghs - but as you and I both know there is about as much chance of any Irishman worthy of the name bending the knee to a descendant of Diarmait na nGall as a Mehmet II appreciation society being formed in Athens.

Dear Dr Eric,
You know that Ghandi was very weak from all the fasting he did and that he had lots of callouses from walking barefoot - he also had bad breath from all the onions and garlic he ate - that's why he was know as the:
Super-calloused Fragile Mystic Hexed by Halitosis!

Sorry, but a few posts back Alex reminded me of a parody headline from The Onion years ago - i.e., "Perky Canada has Own Government, Laws."

Watch out for Canada. It's full of anachronistic Ukrainian anarchists.

Possible claimants to the Irish throne - aside from King Francis.
1. The O'Conor Don (can't say he's intensely interested, but he would accept the throne if it were offered),
2. The O'Brian, Prince of Thomond (I've had no contact with him and don't know how he views the matter), and
3. The O'Neill - who does indeed live in Portugal, but comes to Ireland when invited for major events. This causes some confusion amongst those who don't quite grasp who he is or what his importance might be.
My approach is, at previously stated, that only God can send us a King. My personal preference would be a Hapsburg, but that's nothing more than my personal preference. Perhaps I should be patient; King Francis has no sons, and his claim with reference to the Three Kingdoms will pass upon his death to the Prince of Liechtenstein - who is a Hapsburg.
More currently interest might be the question of Scotland. In the present political situation of Scotland, I suspect that a credible Stuart claimant would not be entirely unwelcome. Alex Salmond, God prosper him, is not running for King, and has made it clear that so long as Scotland is independent he is unconcerned with monarchy pro or con.
Time was when one could ask the pope - or the Emperor - to adjudicate such matters, but just now that would not work very well!
Fr. Serge

Speaking of, I'll be studying abroad in Innsbruck, Austria for all of July and half of August, and one of my chosen courses is "History of the Hapsburg Empire." We have an excursion to Vienna for that trip to view Hapsburg related stuff! I'll be sure to venerate! Exciting, eh?

Air Canada! Across our native land. Through rain and sleet, we dash at thy command.
My bags have gone to Ecuador or possibly Dundee. Yet I remain, Air Canada, to stand in line for thee!
Air Canada! Belov'd monopoly! We stand in line, we stand in line for thee! Air Canada! we stand in line for thee!

Alex,
The closest I come to being Canadian is that my dad's originally from Oswego, NY. Right across Lake Ontario from y'all!
