Sometimes British Airways is worse. By the way, Heathrow Airport is notorious for misplacing luggage.

I have never been to Canada. However, one of my dream vacations is to take the cross-country train trip I have read about in various magazines for years. The pictures are gorgeous.

My grandmother lived near Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan when she was a little girl. A brother and sister were born there. Subsequently they all returned to Charleroi, Pennsylvania. From "flat" to "n'at". www.pittsburghese.com [ pittsburghese.com]

Air Canada! Across our native land. Through rain and sleet, we dash at thy command.
My bags have gone to Ecuador or possibly Dundee. Yet I remain, Air Canada, to stand in line for thee!
Air Canada! Belov'd monopoly! We stand in line, we stand in line for thee! Air Canada! we stand in line for thee! Don't you know it is Canadian law to post both the French and the English?

I checked out VIA (canada's rail system) and to go from say Toronto-British Columbia was 2300 Canadian (which in US dollars is probably still 2000 dollars) roundtrip for a basic steerage ticket. That's alot of money, add things like a room and you may as well plan one of those rides in space the Russians will sell you.

National Geographic or Smithsonian magazine did an article on this a few years ago - I don't remember which magazine it was. Anyway, the photographs were excellent and the scenery very beautiful. I have a love for trains that goes back to my childhood but unfortunately, the U.S. trains are not what they once were.

One must also take the weather into account. The Canadian West is magnificent on a fine summer day. I don't recommend it in the rain (and don't even ask about the winter unless you're a snow freak).
I've flown from Toronto to Vancouver and back eight times or so. I've seen the Rockies from the air exactly once - on that occasion, the view was utterly spectacular, but one out of eight is not good odds.
And, of course, travelling by train all the way way across Canada, one must eat, no matter how glorious the scenery is. I don't think I've ever eaten a meal on a Canadian train, so I can't offer an opinion.
