Looks like Televangelist Bill Keller thinks Mitt has the corner on the Beelzebub vote [ sun-sentinel.com]. (And he will soon have troubles with the IRS and his 501(c)3 status.) Keller says "if you vote for Mitt Romney, you are voting for Satan." Which confirms that Satan is handsome. Besides, if Mitt is elected he will "ultimately lead millions of souls into the eternal flames of Hell." ...where they'll undoubtedly burn with Orthodox and Catholics forever. There's a campaign slogan: "Nine out of 10 hate-filled crackers prefer McCain." ------ Western Orthodoxy Blog [westernorthodox.blogspot.com]

There's at LEAST a 50% chance that Romney won't get my vote.
That being said...I've said this before and I'll say it again, "politics is a nasty, ugly business", and people like Mr. Keller only make matters worse.

I really don't think that Romney can get the Republican nomination. I really think that folks like this minister would vote for Giuliani before they would vote for Romney. I know this from knowing the rank and file of southern fundamentalist politically active Christianity and they hate Mormons more than they hate Pro-choice folks. You would be amazed to see the number of people who would call Giuliani just "misguided on one issue," or "a little off," and who would call Romney an agent of Satan and potentially the antichrist. Giuliani (who is still way out in front in the polls) is going to get the Republican nomination, unless Fred Thompson decides to run. He could possibly get it. At least, if I were a gambling man, that is how I would place my bets.

Thirty years ago the Southern Baptist Convention was pro-abortion because the pro-life view was too Catholic. But they changed their positions in the mid eighties. Among those who I've known in that circle, they seem less anti-Catholic than their forefathers.

It's always interested me the extent to which abortion plays a role in US elections, and I don't quite understand it; I look at the Catechism and the four sins which cry to heaven are mostly to do with social justice and poverty, and abortion doesn't figure, which is why most Australian Catholics vote for our equivalent of the Democrats (Labour). (I'm not sure of that was the same there; I know the Irish were traditinally Dems, but I thought Whigs would have attracted a fair few Catholic votes in the Lincoln era).
That's not to say abortion isn't an issue, and I generally vote for pro life parties in our senate, but I vote for labour in our lower house for the justice reasons; I mean I figure the best way to control abortion is social conscience and less poor people.

I think that it is a major issue here in the States because there has been an unresolved debate on it. Our abortion laws were "set in stone" by the Supreme Court, and many people find a justification in the rule of law. It is a polarizing issue.
For the Democrats in 2004, support for abortion was one of the issues that brought the party together on the national level. For this election cycle the Democrat party seems to be splitting on their leaders support or non-support of American involvement in Iraq.
I have found that for some people who justify a safe and legal abortion, they do so for the sake of others. They see it as a personal decision and do not reflect too deeply on what human life is, or what the consequences are of ending life. Other times people fail to recognize an unborn child as having life. I know quite a few Christians who justify abortion.
It may boil down to moral confusion and a stubborn self-centeredness that does not recognize an other. That mode of thought has consequences outside of abortion, such as with the abuse and euthanasia of the elderly. I would be very careful if I were older and my life was in the hands of an ethics board of a major hospital. Too often our elderly are not even allows to have hydration and nutrients through an IV, as this is considered "extraordinary care".

He said that a vote for Romney is a vote for Satan, not Stalin. Dear Dr. Eric, I guess Subdeacon Borislav finds no difference between Satan and Stalin. Hee, hee, hee! God Bless, Zenovia

In some respects the two were not dissimilar.

which is why most Australian Catholics vote for our equivalent of the Democrats (Labour). (I'm not sure of that was the same there; I know the Irish were traditinally Dems, but I thought Whigs would have attracted a fair few Catholic votes in the Lincoln era). Dear Ned, We have a big problem here. It's ignorance! We have the most unjust system in the world. The rich, which is probably about one in every fifty, (and by rich, I mean those that live on a minimum of one million a year), do not pay any taxes. The tax books are filled with legal deductions to assure this. The problem is that only the rich can afford the accountants to find the loop holes, insuring that they will not pay anything. In the mean time, the so called 'labour party', the Democrats, (which is also the big business party), wants to raise taxes on what they are calling the 'rich'. The problem is that those so called 'rich' is that they are not rich, especially in my area, where everything is phenominally expensive. In other words, they are calling the middle class rich, and want to tax them more. Basically the middle class is carrying the country, while the wealthy and the poor are paying nothing. The Republican party on the other hand, has lowered taxes, especially on small businesses. They have also lessened regulations so that small businesses can thrive. This way there will be more jobs for everyone. That's why I call the Democrats the party of big business as well as labour...although they pretend to those that are not in the know, (which is about everyone the media can reach), that they are for the poor. They believe in giving hand outs rather than producing jobs for the American workers. They also believe in preserving endangered snails, bugs, etc., to the detriment of people making a livlihood. So you figure? And then there are the lawyer lobbies, and frankly they are not poor...all supported by our so called labour party. When someone comes out for a flat tax so that the rich can pay their due, and stop all their deductions, that person is ignored. God Bless, Zenovia

I'm reading Radzinsky's biography on Stalin right now. It's good.

The rich, which is probably about one in every fifty, (and by rich, I mean those that live on a minimum of one million a year), do not pay any taxes. Actually, they pay the vast majority of taxes. The poorest half barely pay any taxes. But no one complains about that. And yes, Subdn. Borislav had it right on about Stalin=Satan.
