Hmmm, even some Episcopalians in this country venerate the Cross barefoot on Good Friday. I think St. Mary the Virgin near Times Square utilizes this practice.

Alexis The priest, deacon and sub-deacon as well as the servers at the parish I am currently attending "crept to the Cross" bare-foot on Good Friday, as did many of the laity in the nave. It is still utilized in most Anglo-Catholic parishes, to varying degrees. Though it's rare in RC parishes in my area from what I've seen.

That would explain why I saw it depicted on the series I am watching, which takes place in Catholic England in the 1500's. It is very penitential and, thus, beautiful to behold. On Holy Thursday night, in a similar penitential act, our Priest invites us to do a prostration before the Holy Cross (large crucifix from the altar) set out infront of the iconastasis. He also reminds us that when we don't like another and cannot forgive them, that we should remember the Cross, and could we possibly say that if we were at the foot of it? Since we deal with people every day everywhere that we may not like or who may not like us, it is something which we need to remember...difficult as it may be. Alice

Dear RC Friends,
Well, O.K., I've never seen it done in our NO parishes up here.
We do have foot-washing where people are bare-foot.
I would rather not go there, as this tremendous impishness overwhelms me that makes me want to tickle people . . .
This is why I like reflexology - it provides a legitimate pretext to get people to entrust their bare feet to me . . .
After tickling them to death, I simply tell them it is part of the reflexology procedure, to see if they're ticklish or not, how much pressure to apply etc.
Gosh, the Roman rite really IS so very different!
As our parish priest once said, "we are one, but there is not one aspect of our traditions that is not completely different from the other . . ."
And, Mary, I'll go toe-to-toe with you anytime!!
Alex

Well, it's definitely done in traditional Catholic circles! And I'm pretty sure in some Novus Ordo ones too!
