On Sunday, 28 March 2004, a chapel on the building site of the UGC cathedral in Kyiv was consecrfated by Kyr Vasyl (Medvit). After the service Kyr Vasyl thanked the Studite monks who have consented to minister to the cathedral parish. Services will be held in the chapel daily. Michael, starved for good news Dear Michael, The article will more than likely appear on http://www.risu.org.ua in a few days, in English, Ukrainian, German and Russian. There may also be pictures at http://www.kyivpatriarchalsobor.org/ soon. They regularly post photo updates of the construction progress, including an external shot of the chapel (a very simple affair). I've tried that site a few times today but have not been able to connect. Oυτις ημιν φιλει ου φροντιδα | Nemo nos diliget non curamus

Maybe one day the UGCC can build a cathedral in Moskva or Sankt Petersburg and then it will be Russian Greek Catholic maybe one day. Maybe Russia will convert a patriarch of All Russia that is under the Pope.

Dear RP What a great idea However let's get the Kyiv Cathedral finished , the Patriarch in residence there, before we start thinking about building Cathedrals elsewhere. Anhelyna

There are lots pictures of the new Sobor and chapel in Kyiv. If you have the time you can see them on the Ukrainian language version of the UGCC web site. At the bottom of the site you will see the two pictures. If you click on the red writing (in Ukrainian) next to the two pictures you can get a more comprehensive photo-montage of the construction.
Why is it that there is always less information on the English language versions (as compared to the Ukrainian) of the UGCC web site ?
For example, two news stories (in Ukrainian) before this one, there is a post about a symposium at the Taras Shevchenko University in Kyiv, about the life and times of Monsignor Avgustin Voloshyn, first president of the Carpatho-Ukrainian Republic (1939) which included the full support of the bishops of the Mukachiv and Priashiv eparchies of the Ruthenian Greek Catholic Church. This story would probably be of great interest to the Carpatho-Rusyn Greek Catholics.
The symposium had some very interesting speakers, including Vasyl Kruk who became the leader of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) after General Roman Shukhevych's death in 1950. Although not mentioned in this news story, Vasyl Kruk who led the UPA from 1950 - 1954 knew Monsignor Voloshyn (and later Bishop Margitych) of the Ruthenian Greek Catholic Church and has spoken in the past of their courage and determination to see the Greek Catholic faith survive the NAZIS (and their Hungarian Nationalist collaborators) and later the communists' regimes.
According to the web site story, a complete audio recording of the Monsignor and President Avgustin Voloshyn symposium is available for educational purposes. I will translate this post when I get home tonight.
I sent the UGCC Patriarchal office a memo this morning about the need for more English language stories on their site. I noticed that RISU now has stories in German and Russian (in addition to Ukrainian and English) so I'm sure they are moving in the right direction.

How is UPA heroic? They killed thousand of Poles in places where they had lived for centuries. If 200,000 people killed isn't an atrocity what is? UPA were Nazi collaborators. Why do you think Hitler was planning to set up a Reichkomstrrat Ukraina? UPA killed many and destroyed much and just paved way for the Soviets to drive them over to make western Poland into the USSR and with the Poles gone the Ukrainians and Russians, who before the war didn't even know of Lwow, came from beyond the Dniepr and made this as there home. Lwow and all Ukraine to the Dniepr should be under Poland's control as it was same thing with Bialorus. The boundaries should be from Crimea to Czernihow to Smolensk and all of modern Lithaunia should be one and ruled from Warsaw.Did Poland gain any land any money after the genocides in Wolyn,Katyn, and numerous others ? Did we get fair restitution? No, our 'allies" sold us to the Soviets and had to fight the Cold War for 40 years with their good friends the Soviets.Poland should gain restitution no amount of historical revisionism can change the truth and the truth is known.

RP
I am exhausted by your uncharitable posts
Please allow us a break from your political thoughts.
This may be the Church News Forum but it most certainly is not a Forum for political argument.
Anhelyna - hoping for a peaceful week .

From the Lenten Prayer of St. Ephraim the Syrian:
"Yea, O Lord and King, grant me to see mine own faults and not to judge my brothers and sisters. For blessed art Thou unto ages of ages. Amen."
You have once again posted in a manner to create dissention on a thread in which the tone should be one of rejoicing! The consecration of a new Chapel is a cause for celebration....from this wonderful celebration...you have posted: Nazi collaborators.
As we near the most solemn and sacred of weeks, again, I beg you...reflect about whether your posts are causing a stumbling block to others.
O God, cleanse Thou me a sinner,
Gaudior, penitentially

Dear RP,
"Lwow" is now "Lviv."
The Poles are gone from Western Ukraine - finally.
Ukraine and Poland are trying to build bridges of understanding and mutual forgiveness after centuries of distrust and hatred.
I am half-Polish and half-Ukrainian of the family of Jablonowskie.
I am proud of both sides of my family.
If you cannot speak here in a spirit of Christian charity, you should consider leaving and taking your old-style propaganda with you.
There is a new Poland and a new Ukraine today that will become allies, mutually respecting one another.
You have given offense against both nations here, sir.
I call on the moderator here to address this issue and your offensiveness as soon as possible.
Alex

RP,
Please consider the appropriateness (or lack thereof) of you comments. Although I do not believe that you have bad intentions, what you are saying comes across as very inflammatory. In the past day I have received no less than two angry emails about your posts. I am urging you to tone it down a few notches.
Thanks, Anthony Moderator
