Is there any Ukrainian hierarch in the Americas who normally serves according to the Julian calendar?

Don't know about Canada but in the US the hierarchs only serve with the Julian Calendar when they are celebrating in Julian Calendar parishes. All four of the cathedrals are New Calendar.

The one exception might be Toronto; Kyr Isidore celebrated according to the Julian when he was alive; perhaps some of the Toronto folks here on the Forum can answer to the current status with Kyr Stephen (Chmiliar).

Ryan,

We did actually follow two calendars for a while, but at present we are strictly Old Calendar (except for additional Liturgies on New Calendar Christmas and Easter).

Fr. Serge,

I had noted previously that you are partisan to the Old Calendar. Most Ukrainian Catholics I know see this as a matter of ethnic loyalty, but I suspect you have more insight into the matter than that. While you have probably elaborated on this in the past, would you mind repeating it for the sake of some of us newbies? Thanks.

Peace,
Deacon Richard

Dear Father Deacon,

I favor the Julian Calendar because it is, objectively, a better calendar in terms of accuracy, and because our Typicon is geared to it. If you want further information, I can refer you to some articles in Eastern Churches Journal.

Last time I looked, the Metropolitan's Cathedral in Winnipeg retained the Julian Calendar, and the Cathedral in Toronto does the same. Last time I was in Saskatoon (which is about 20 years ago) there was an uproar because the clergy wanted to change the calendar in the Cathedral. The Cathedrals in Edmonton and Vancouver certainly follow the Gregorian Calendar.

The Cathedral in Melbourne follows the Julian Calendar, and so do most of the parishes in Australia, New Zealand, and Oceania. The Cathedral in London is of course Julian Calendar (they've had more than enough trouble already; the last thing they need is a calendar battle!).

I think that's it for Ukrainian Greek-Catholic cathedrals in the English-speaking world.

with every blessing,

Fr. Serge

Is this true? I would not have expected it, and sincerely hope it is (namely that the vast majority of Uniates are old-calendarists). Does anyone know which calendar the Roumanian Uniates in Roumania are on? Is it even monolithic, or is it on a parish by parish basis?

Yes, it really happened. And to think that people accuse us who adhere to the Julian Calendar of madness!

Yes I too have been at mass in Boston many years ago and the entire mass was -doubled -old calendar and new calendar . It was quite difficult to keep up. When I inquired as to why the parish just didn't make one mass old calendar and the othe new calendar , my cousin said because the people are stubborn. Both the older and younger generations wanted to have the 1030am ? liturgy, neither wanted to submit to the earlier mass.
