Fr. Basill Kraynyak, Pastor of St. Anne's Byzantine Catholic Church in New Port Richie, FL suffered a heart attack on the plane ride back from a trip to the Old Country. His funeral will be held in Philadelphia. Please remember him in your prayers.
Fr. Basil's voice can be heard on many recordings from the Holy Ghost Church in Philadelphia over many years. May his memory be eternal! Vich Naja Jemu Pamjat!

A friend and I visited Father Basil's parish and attended Divine Liturgy there while we were on a trip to Florida during the fall of 2000. After Divine Liturgy, Father welcomed us and made us lunch at the rectory. We chatted with him for hours and he was very kind and gracious to us. I will miss him and I was hoping to go back to Florida this fall and stop by for another visit with him. May his memory be eternal!

In Christ,
Anthony

It is indeed a great loss for the entire Ruthenian Byzantine Catholic Metropolia. He was one of only a few senior Byzantine Catholic priests of the Metropolia that truly was dedicated to the spiritual well-being of all of the Byzantine Catholic faithful both in America and in the Rusyn homeland. He will be missed by all and especially by all of the Mt. Macrina Dormition "Otpust" pilgrims. The many Uniontown pilgrims will miss his presence especially those who gathered during the pilgrimage evening nights to sing the many liturgical hymns and hymns to the "Bohorodice". May God grant the Rev. Basil Kraynyak a blessed repose and eternal memory.

Father Basil Kraynyak always sang certain particular and deeply beautiful "Uniontown pisn'i" that few other resources give or knew. He would pass out sheets with the text each year. In the Sisters' spivannyk, some Uniontown hymns are given, such as "Pojdeme, Pojdeme, do Uniontown na Horu" but Fr. Basil's go beyond these. Does anyone (Rich perhaps) have copies of these sheets and could you provide the words to some of Father's special hymns. I do not know the origin of all of them, but I assume that some were ones he heard commonly used by the palomniki (pilgrims) during the bus trip from Yonkers or Philadelphia (and maybe other places) with which he became familiar and that we have largely lost now. Many are dedicated to the "Uniontown Mother of God" (Mati Bozha Junjintavn'ska) or to Mary of the Rosary, (and even some to our Lady of Fatima) since the rosary and hymns were a common pastime on the busses.

In particular, I remember several Rusyn hymns: "Prijdi ko mni Ditij Moji", "Uniontown na Hori - Obraz Mariji" and "Dobru noc vincujem, Divo Marije". Can anyone provide the text for these songs? Rich gives some others that Fr. Basil would sing, including "Pojdeme do Zahrady", "Vykvila Nam Ruzha" and "Spivajme Veselo" (actually popular with the "Litmanovskych Palomnikiv") in his "Malyj Odpustoyji Spivannik" but not the first three above. If anyone has a copy of the sheets, I would be glad to receive a scan or fax of it or better, to see it posted here, for everyone's edification.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Rich: Your installment in Fr. Basil's website guestbook, in beautiful Rusyn, was wonderful and brought tears to my eyes.

Eternal Memory dear friend and teacher, Fr. Basil. Christos Voskres!

God bless you all.

Fr. Joe
