Excellent article about a misunderstood man. Some of his more intemperate outbursts at us in Orthodoxy scare me (Ive looked at For the Life of the World) dangerous stuff that if taken out of context could lead to things like the post-Vatican II dbcle but now I think I understand where he was coming from. (And Ive seen the extreme he was railing against.) He resembled the legit Roman Catholic pre-V2 liturgical movement (which is not to blame for what happened), which he influenced.
I have a beard as Stuart can attest it is reaching healthy Orthodox muik proportions and use Slavonic in my prayers but am not living in la-la land. I hang out in SoHo and Greenwich Village. I go to R-rated art films. I drink occasionally and sporadically date. I count among people I love musician acquaintances who are discreetly pro-choice (and nicer people than some Christians Ive been acquainted with), and even though that hurts me I remains friends with them. Being in the world, but not of it: doing so is a tightrope act but not one that requires trashing a rite as happened in the Latin Church after the 1960s. Fr Alexander agreed.
