In conjunction with the world-wide Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, on Sunday, September 30, 2007 the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in the USA will be celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the arrival of the first Greek Catholic bishop in the United States for Ruthenian/Ukrainian Catholics.

It will be held at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania beginning at 1:00pm.

EWTN is going to carry this live on September 30th at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time. It will re-air on 10/1/07 at 12:00 a.m. Eastern Time. The Liturgy is 3 hours in length.

Sounds lovely - must get someone to record it for me (God willing, I'll be in Sydney that day).

EWTN keeps an extensive audio archive, would they save this as well?

Don't know - in any case, I want to be able to see it, not just hear it. For those of you who haven't yet seen the Cathedral in Philadelplhia, it's quite impressive.

Terry and Father Serge:

EWTN usually has any of these types of celebrations recorded on DVD and available for sale. You might contact them and see if they will be doing it for this one. If enough advance interest is generated, they might make a special point to make sure it is available.

Dear all,

It's a real blessing that this great event will be covered by EWTN, which I know is watched by many (Catholics and non-Catholics alike). We seminarians from St. Josaphat will be serving at the altar, which is a great privilege (it is always a great privilege to serve, mind you!)
I believe, from my Rector, that a vast number of Eastern bishops will be participating, including those of all the Eastern Catholic Churches represented in the United States (Ukrainian, Ruthenian, Melkite, Maronite, Syro-Malabar, Syro-Malankar, Chaldean, Syrian etc.) In addition, there will be about 30 or 40 Roman cardinals, archbishops and bishops. Furthermore, as if this number weren't enough, all the priests from the Eparchies of Stamford and Philadelphia and a good representation from those of Parma and Chicago will be there.
It really begs the question: where are the laity going to fit?

A week later, the Synod will be coming to the National Shrine of the Holy Family in Washington D.C. Patriarch Lyubomyr will receive an honorary doctorate from the Catholic University of America.
If anyone is in town on Friday 5 October, there will be Pontifical Divine Liturgy at 11am, and another on Saturday 6 October at 9am, at both of which we the seminarians will sing.
(Philadelphia Liturgies: Thursday 27 September and Sunday 30 September at 1pm - the latter is the big one on EWTN).

Tune in my friends!
In Christ,

JM.

JM,

Do you know if there are plans to video record the liturgy on the 5th in Washington? If not, could OLTV be given permission to do so - we would definitely make a DVD available and put the event on our website for viewing.

Where I can find out the schedule for the rest of that week?

EWTN will also broadcast two programs about Ukraine this month.

09/18/07 3:00 AM UKRAINE - FORGOTTEN GENERATION 0:30 After a long history of persecution, the Ukraine declared independence in 1991; this is the story of what comes next, including the country's difficulty coping with the dire condition of education and childcare

09/21/07 3:00 AM UKRAINE: SEEDS OF FAITH 0:30 In recent years the Ukraine has seen an influx of seminarians, this documentary follows the adjustments being made to support them.

Jack,

I don't think there are any plans to do so, but I myself was thinking it should be done. It may not be a full pontifical Liturgy, though, but it will have bishops (hope that makes sense)...you know how Eastern Catholics can be. Still, we're hoping to sing very well and all.
I would recommend telephoning the rector of the shrine and asking him. I don't have the number with me, but it should be available on the website of the Holy Family National Shrine. His name is Fr. Nestor (I don't recall his surname).
I wish I, myself, knew the schedule for the rest of the week. As is typical of easterners, nothing has been finalised apart from the Liturgies. I expect to know five minutes before the start of each thing. (sic)

In Christ, Joseph.

The Synod of the Ukrainian Catholic Bishops is scheduled to meet in the United States of America from 26 September until 6 October, 2007. His Beatitude, Lubomyr Cardinal Husar
will open the Synod with the Bishops of the Ukrainian Church with a Divine Liturgy at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Philadelphia, PA.
From there the Bishops will proceed to the National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa in Doylestown, PA.
The Synod will discuss topics such as Evangelization, Formation in the Priesthood, and the recent Sobor of Youth which was held in Kyiv, Ukraine. Other subjects on the agenda will be consideration of the Synod Statutes, election of members to the Permanent Synod, election of heads of various Synodal committees, the Particular Law of the Ukrainian Catholic Church, and presentation of the reports submitted by various Synodal committees.
The Synod will shift its deliberations to the nations capital, Washington, DC for the final three days. A highlight of the Synod will be the Centennial celebration of the arrival of
the first Greek Catholic Ruthenian/Ukrainian Bishop the United States, +Most Reverend Stephen Soter Ortynsky, OSBM. A Divine Liturgy is scheduled on Sunday, September 30, 2007 at 1:00PM at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Along with His Beatitude, Cardinal Lubomyr, seven other Cardinals will be attending. In addition to the almost fifty Ukrainian Catholic Bishops, another fifty Eastern and Latin Bishops will be attending.
Other dignitaries will represent various Orthodox, Protestant and other faiths. Several civil authorities will attend.
The Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia is the first Eastern Catholic jurisdiction outside any Eastern Catholic homeland. The Ukrainian Catholic Synod of Bishops has elected to honor this distinction by holding its Synod in North America for the first time in its history. Previous Synods were held in Rome until Ukraine became independent. Since then,
all Synods have been held in Ukraine.
Metropolitan Stefan Soroka is pleased and honored to host this Synod and events for the good of the Church and showcase the life of the Ukrainian Catholic Church outside of Ukraine.

NOTE: Catholic Television EWTN plans a live broadcast of the September 30 Divine Liturgy from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00pm Eastern Time. EWTN will repeat the broadcast that same evening at 12:00 midnight Eastern Time.

Also, it is quite possible that the Philadelphia Archeparchy may have DVDs of the September 30th Celebration available shortly after the event. You may want to inquire.

May I add that there will also be Hierarchical Divine Liturgies at the shrine here in Washington D.C., at which we the seminarians will (try to) sing (well). By the way, while the Synod meets here, Patriarch Lubomyr will receive an honorary doctorate from the Catholic University of America.

The Liturgies in Washington are on Friday 5 October at 11am, and Saturday 6 October at 9am.

In Christ, Joseph.
