No offense to those present in Philadelphia, but is that the best our church could do? The bishops from Ukraine probably felt like they were in a huge village somewhere in the Lviv oblast. Even when Patriarch Lubomyr would visit the smallest villages in the Lviv Archeparchy he would vest in the center of the temple and the choir would sing something other than congregational samoilka.
It's as if they clergy and choir had a week's notice. I am sure, however, that the banquet was nice.

Hi all! I joined the forum just today, having seen the beautiful Liturgy on EWTN, and I want to thank Father Anthony for hosting this excellent forum.
Pavloosh, I was very pleased to hear such a large choir. I thought you all sang very well, and as an Orthodox convert, I enjoyed hearing everything you sang. It sounded "just like home".
Thanks again to everyone!
With prayers, in Christ
Marya333

Fr. Deacon Lance,
While you may consider Bishop Takach the first bishop, history says otherwise. Bishop Soter Ortinsky was appointed as Bishop for all Greek Catholics, which included those who are presently part of the Metropolia of Pittsburgh. One of the first churches he blessed was St. Michael's in South Fork, PA, a parish of the Pittsburgh Archeparchy and that was also his official residence for a year. It is true that his jurisdiction, at first. was not ordinary, but on May 13, 1913, an Apostolic Exarchate was established "for all the clergy and the people of the Ruthenian Rite in the United States of America", and Bishop Ortinsky was granted full episcopal jurisdiction. This information is taken from the history in your own directory celebrating the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the Byzantine-Ruthenian Metropolitan Church of Pittsburgh.
Further, the words spoken at the celebration itself, both by Metropolitan Stefan and Patriarch Lubomyr, as well as the commentator, made it very clear that it was a united Greek Catholic Church of which Bishop Ortinsky was head. The participation of all four Ruthenian bishops was further indication, as well as the fact that two of the priest concelebrants were Ruthenian priests, the protosyncellus of Parma and the protosyncellus of Passaic. If this were not the case these priests would not have accepted the invitation to participate in such a prominent manner.

Which Archeparchy has more members at the present time, Philadelphia (Ukrainian Greek Catholic) or Pittsburgh (Ruthenian Byzantine Catholic)?
Which will survive in the future?

Etnick: I am sorry - "right church, wrong pew" so to speak. The beautiful hymn to Our Blessed Lady you referred to is: "Render Praise, Ye Vales and Mountains" / "Vykhvalyaite Doly, Hory". Words: V. Stekh +1945 Based on "Causa nostra laetitiae" by St. Alphonsus Liguori Melody from Krakow Translation: Conrad B. Dachuck Can give you the music and words if you'd like. Pavloosh

The letter from Pope Benedict read at the liturgy called Bishop Soter first Ukrainian bishop in the US. It seemed pretty clear that this was a Ukrainina celebration to which Rusyns were invited. And thats all right, in 2024 the Ukrainians can come to Pittsburgh for the anniversary of Bishop Basil as first Carpatho-Rusyn bishop in the US.
Fr. Deacon Lance As I recall the acta establishing Kyr Soter established him as exarch for all "Ruthenian" Greek Catholics, whether of Galician or other provenance. It was only later after World War I that the unfortunate ethnic disputes created a call for separate jurisdictions. Bishop Ortynsky DID have ordinary jurisdiction over ALL Greek Catholics in the USA before he died. This was granted by Rome on May 28 1913. His vicar general was the Rev. Alexander Dzubay. (A Rusyn priest), as well as some other priests in top positions who were Carpatho Rusyn.
His appointed positions were almost half Ukrainian and half Rusyn to help level the playing field, and to try to stop the nationalist bickering that was going on at the time. Exactly. It makes sense to take the anniversary of the "beginning" rather than some other development down the road. Many years and God's blessings to Patriarch Lubomyr, the Synod and the entire Church! Chudovo!!! p.s. Vitaemo Marya!!!
