Hi,

I have a question for those familiar with the Syrian Orthodox tradition. Please have a look at the quote below:

Quote
Candy-red prayer beads clicked in the patriarch's [Zakka Iwas] fingers as he spoke of his anxiety about the dangers facing Christians in a war launched by U.S. President George W. Bush against Iraq.

The rest of the report is found somewhere in this page:

http://www.zindamagazine.com/html/archives/2003/3.24.03/index.php

The report is titled "SYRIAN ORTHODOX PATRIARCH LOSES SLEEP OVER HIS IRAQI FLOCK".

Is there a tradition of prayer beads in the Syrian Church? When I was talking about this with Edward a while back, he jokingly said maybe the patriarch was clicking worry beads. Jokes aside, can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks.

Ernest,

A great question! I look forward to hearing an answer as well.

Also, if these beads do exist, how does one acquire a set?

God bless,

Gordo

Dear Ernest,

'Worry beads' are not a joke, they are widely played with and used as a pass time to relieve worry and stress in the Arab world and also in Greece. They probably derived from prayer ropes.

They come in many different sizes, colors, stones, and even metals like sterling silver and gold!

I remember a time when one would pass a 'kafeneion' (or a 'cafe' which was reserved for only men, in which they would pass hours discussing politics, people watching, drinking coffee, etc.) in Greece, and how you could hear the clicking of their worry beads in their hands.

Do a google search on 'worry beads', and you will come to many sites that sell them and explain them. They are called 'komboloi' in Greek, whereas a prayer rope is called a 'komboskini'.

Dear Alice,

Thank you for the reply and suggestions. Actually, I didn't quite mean it that way when I said "joke". A figure of speech that went wrong perhaps blush Anyway, I am still wondering if there might be a tradition of prayer beads among syrian orthodox. I have been trying to get some info on this for a while but the internet hasn't been terribly helpful. I was hoping some insiders could tell me something. Thanks. smile
