The Georgian Orthodox Church protests against Catholic propaganda in schools

Tbilisi, August 25, Interfax - The Georgian Orthodox Church is against 'We Build the Future' Roman Catholic Church's program in Georgian secondary schools.

The statement of the Patriarchate circulated Thursday says that the Georgian hurch 'considers it impossible to create a religious organization for popularization of Catholicism in secondary schools'.

'Such actions arouse justified public dissatisfaction and cripple traditional relations with the Catholic Church', the statement reads.

Georgian mass media has reported earlier this week that the Roman Catholic Church assigned over five million dollars for carrying out 'We Build the Future' program in Georgia intended to set up youth religious clubs in schools.

There are many things that must be investigated before making a hard judgement about the activities of the Roman Catholic Church in Georgia:

1. Does this programme promotes the conversion of young people from Orthodoxy to Roman Catholicism in an open way?

2. Are these programmes operated by organizations of explicitly hetherodox doctrine that depart even from the common Roman practice (Focolare, Charismatic sect, etc)?

3. Do they promote liberal tendencies or attempts to question Orthodox liturgical practice and ascetism that would lead to a Western or modernist approach to Chrisianity?

The Roman Church has many programmes that are only humanitarian and which do not intend to convert or preach their Roman Catholic faith.

I wonder, is this statement being spread in RC schools in Georgia? If this is the case, all I have to say to the Orthodox there: "Too bad!" If the Orthodox don't like it, don't send your kid to the Catholic school. The RC's have a right to promote RC theology in their own schools, just as the EO would have a right to promote the EO faith in EO schools.

Can anyone tell us how many Catholic schoolchildren there are in Georgia?

Mexican,

What in your opinion is heterodox about the Focolare Movement?

It has been endorsed by both the Pope and the Oecumenical Patriarch.
